Update: We are able to reproduce this and working on identifying the root cause. May be related to the USB 3.0 controller firmware.

I just noticed I'm having issues with my Seagate usb 3 extral HDD. It just keeps saying it needs to be formatted. My audio crackles a little bit when I plug it in. After I try and plug it in a second time, it isn't even recognized. The VIA drivers seem to install ok, but the installer program crashes at the end, if that means anything. Drive works fine in an other system with MSI board and NEC USB 3. Going to try a fresh install of Windows on a different hard drive and see what happens. Hoping there is a solution to this other than RMA. Specs: i72600k z68FTW onboard audio ocz revo drive x2 2x gtx 580 SLI

Every once in a while, I have this problem, too. What I do to fix it is: 1) Reboot machine 2) Disable USB 3.0 in BIOS 3) Start Windows 7 4) Reboot machine 5) Enable USB 3.0 in BIOS 6) Start Windows 7 This method hasn't failed, yet. Definitively seems like a BIOS/chipset thing. wxmanunr

I occasionally have my USB 3.0 ports completely go away after some time. The only way to get them back is to power down the computer and unplug it from the wall until all the motherboard LEDs go off. Then I plug it back into the wall and power it on, USB 3.0 ports work again. -Jerry

Bought a Z68 FTW earlier this month. I am up and running with the board and dual GTX 560 Ti 448 core FTW's. Everything seems cool except ... VIA USB 3.0 Root Hub does not work. It always has the error marker next to it in Device Manager and says it could not start the device. Looking forward to the fix. Have a 3TB USB 3.0 external drive that I cannot connect at full speed. Backups take forever at USB 2.0 speed... -Rick

joaks87 Jacob or Matt, Any update on this? EVGA_JacobF Update: We are able to reproduce this and working on identifying the root cause. May be related to the USB 3.0 controller firmware. So Jacob, when you finally get it figured out.... let ASUS know the fix. I agree that the NEC chip is suspect. My USB 3.0 works when it wants to. Drivers load fine, but a USB 3.0 drive is not always recognized as being plugged in. The 3.0 USB drive works just fine on a 2.0 port, and 2.0 devices work fine in the 3.0 ports... but plugging in the USB external 3.0 drive into a 3.0 connector is a crapshoot. It is usually is not even seen.

I have been watching this thread because I have a z68 in build (click on the Mods Rigs icon at left). I have an external SATA disc connected to the rear of the MOB on this machine. It disappears fom the list every nite and I coudn't find out why. So I looked up the mfg's faq. It stated to never allow your machine to go into sleep mode because the HD would disapear from Windows list. But if you did allow your machine to sleep then the remedy was this: Turn off your machine completely. Turn off the external drive. Turn on your machine and allow it to reboot. turn on the external drive. I did that and the drive re-appeared. (This drive has a switch on the back). This is not an answer to the problem, I know, but at least we know the problem is common.

I've been battling the USB-3 issues on the Z68FTW & P67FTW boards. I might have found the problem after hours of hardware arrangements different configurations. I could put the 2 GPU in any places I wanted but not one could be in the top red PCI-E slot. I may be wrong but it looks like if the top red PCI-E slot is occupied with a (GPU only)it causes a conflict with the USB-3. Other non GPU cards did not conflict with the USB-3. So the conclusion I made was driver or Irq conflict, Irq's looked fine. With that said, I noticed Nvidia had a new driver for the GTX 460. After the new driver install I was able to repopulate the top red PCI-E slot and seems to be working fine! I hope this will be the resolution. Crossing my fingers. If someone else could try the new GTX-460 Nvidia (drivers 295.51)

I had some USB 3.0 issues last night, all of the ports became unusable. I looked inside my case and noticed the USB3.0 header had become slightly unplugged (this caused all of the 3.0 ports to stop working, even the ones on the motherboard) Plugging it in and rebooting cleared up the issue. I doubt this is the cause of most of the issues, but its worth looking at if you are having issues. On another note I have 2 460's in my system (with one in the top red slot) i had USB issues all the time until i reinstalled windows and i installed the latest Nvidia beta video drivers (I did this 10 days ago)

jeffreylellis buggyruth I'm not trying to pick on EVGA, They have the best products, service and tech support in the business. But an awful lot of us are having problems with this. Might need some new drivers, or we are all using the wrong drivers? It's not drivers. Also, EVGA does not come close to having the best tech support in the business. Just, look where most of the EVGA customers are getting there help with EVGA products >>> EVGA forum members <<<. Also, there is more to tech support than phone tech support. Did someone say backend tech support, you know, the guy and girls that solve problems before they become to big, like the USB 3.0 problem. The Guys and Girls that play a row in the development of the product and make sure it's ready to go and will perform as expected. ASUS, Gigabyte, and ASRock have the best MBs. When it comes to GPUs, there is not much of a difference, because the GPU MBs are made by a few manufactures and the vendors put custom covers or stickers on them and sometimes custom coolers. Here is what you do. Tell EVGA to fix it! Give them 3 tries (RMAs) at there expense and if they do not fixed it, then tell them you want a refund or credit toward another product. Tell you one thing >>> I'm very happy with my ASUS Pro MBs. They're running flawlessly at 4.8GHz <<<. EVGA has decline a-lot in the MB arena. They're getting stomp hard. Customer service will only get a company so far. BFG had some really nice customer services to and that worked out great for them Last, I never buy a product based on customer services hype. I also do not care for great phone tech support. I prefer the company invest the money in good back end techs and developers that can bring a good product to market and fix the bugs in a timely manner. Support innovation, not hype! The biggest problem with EVGA's hype is that they are too quick to RMA thier stuff before the end user has the chance to work out what's wrong & EVGA tech support is supposed to be the professionals with the most knowledge so ofcourse the end user is going to do exactly what EVGA tells them to do. But half the time they're not sure what is wrong so they want you to RMA whatver it is right away. Somehow they got the idea RMAing is the best troubleshooting solution. The way they could mitigate this issue is to have more faith in their customers know how for example some things just take commone sense and are only not working for obvious reasons, like software updates or firmware updates or if someone is dealing with a driver problem on a brand new platform like SLI or whatever it's something where obviously the end user just needs to hang on while maybe nVidia works out a bug like that and EVGA needs to have faith in their hardware.

You give the "average" end user too much credit to be able to troubleshoot such things. Not every EVGA customer could troubleshoot their own problem, with or without guidance from this forum. Nor is every EVGA customer a member of this forum. A company like EVGA needs to have a support policy in place to handle the "masses", not the select few that may be able to do their own troubleshooting.
