Successful stories of 48 gb + Ram configurations ! Saturday, October 08, 2011 2:01 AM (permalink)
Heya

Its quite a ££ to spend on 48 gb and the official EVGA support section for ram is a bit of an nightmare.

I was wondering if any1 that hit 48 gb + could share their model maker and number so others who want to go 48+ would have it easier to achieve !

Thanks, bye.

I discovered that most of the memory with the exception of the 16GB sticks work with the SR-2. If it shows up as being compatible with the Asus and Supermicro boards which use the 5520 chipset, it is most likely to work with the SR-2. I tested a variety of 8GB sticks which if you look on Asus' and Supermicro's website for memory compatibility you will find the sticks listed under the 8GB category to be perfectly compatible with the SR-2.

With the price of ram being so insanely low, now is an excellent time to purchase and upgrade your memory. The Kingston KVR1333D3D4R9S/8G is compatible and works perfectly with this board. I've discovered that in order for it to work perfectly you need to increase the VTT, CPU, and IOH voltages and it all seems to work fine after that. I've also discovered the memory is decent at overclocking as well, as I was able to get it to run perfectly at 1520 which is more or less the highest it would allow me to go. The memory itself is barely warm to the touch even with overclocking. Currently you can find it on Newegg for around $97 a stick and when you consider at one point it was close to 3 times this price, this isn't a bad deal at all. 96GB is definitely within reach for those that want to go that far. I notice that Crucial is just now beginning to introduce non-ecc non registered 8GB sticks, but they are incredibly expensive at this point. I have no idea if they would work on this board or not. For the sake of compatibility, though, I've found that if you stick with Kingston, Crucial, or Samsung, you will get the best memory compatibility. There are other brands that will probably work, but for the 5520 chipset, these are the ones most commonly listed and you can find them on both Supermicro's website and Asus' as well. Let me know if anyone else out there goes for the big 96GB. Definitely let me know if any of you are able to get the 16GB sticks to work.... I have not been successful in this area.

      Good to know.

As side note I have a quad rank 4 gb sticks from kingston and they appear to give errors when u run them in dual/triple channels - still testing but be warned.

QUAD RANK - dual/triple channel - possible errors.

I suggest not using quad rank... but rather go with dual rank. I believe that using quad rank in more than 1 per channel lowers the clock speed. It may be cheaper than dual rank but it makes upgrading a bit more difficult.
