GTX 550 Ti for folding
Thursday, July 28, 2011 10:52 AM
( permalink)
Really simple, I will be replacing my 9800GT card for an GTX550 Ti. The reason why is that I want to get rid of the noisy heat producer that the 9800GT is. Hoping that the GTX550 will be a quieter and cooler card for folding. I also have a GTX470 that I already use, but that too is major noise and heat producer. So I only rarely start folding on the GTX470, unless it is winter. My PC rig is setup currently as the GTX470 is for video and the 9800GT for Phyisx. The new setup will be the GTX470 for video and the GTX550 for Phyisx & constant while I'm on the PC. Now a question for those that have the GTX 550 Ti, how is the temp levels and noise level when foldin on this card?

at the moment the 550 Ti drivers is not working for the folding so you can't fold with it until they fix the drives :( i'm having the same problem at the moment also. :)

You have to fall back to the 266.71-drivers for this card to work.

Thats the issue for him I don't thin 266.71 supports the 550 ti, but I went back to 266.71 and it works like a charm!

Well, I won't be up and folding anytime soon. Gotta fix this no post problem first. I already replaced the mobo under EVGA RMA. Still same problem, sorry EVGA for the RMA work. So I will be holding off a little longer on the GTX550 card until at least I get my PC rig going again.

oh to get back to your question i was just running mine and it shot up to 63c :O but its pretty hot in my room when it cools down outside it will be about 53°F tonight if not cooler. i didn't hear much on the fan because i have a fan in my window that is covering out the sound.

Those are the temps that I'm looking for. Both my GTX470 and 9800GT will run over 100*C when folding. The 9800GT fan speed will be maxed out while the GTX470 will have just a little more speed left. The GTX470 will heat up very quickly, even under the lightest load. Just watching enough YouTube videos will cause the fans to speed up to where I can hear it. I know it is not case vent issue. The case has a huge air vent on the top that I can feel the GTX470 sucking air through to the bottom where it sits. The CPU idles along at 40*C and may get up to 50*C when running a high load.

100 C for a GTX470!!?? That's extremely high! (to the point that it might fail early, if I remember right) I have 3 GTX480s sandwiched together, and the hottest one only gets to 80C.

I replaced my 470 with the 560ti. Here's the difference. 470 - 560 14k ppd - 13k ppd 180w - 150w 93*C - 83*C If you're referring to the whiny noise the capacitors make, I think it depends on your system.

Whiny noise? I think I hear that just when the GPU starts to fold, but it is quickly drowned out by the fan sounding like a vacuum cleaner. Just want a GPU that runs cooler and quitier, but won't break my wallet. And I like to hear from the owners that do run these GPU before I buy. Currently the 9800GT is folding at 96*C and the GTX470 is idleing at 74*C.

the 267 drivers fold on the 550 Ti just fine, I've been folding on mine for a while now and haven't had any problems. As far as noise and temps. I haven' watched temps too closely lately since I've been running in the 60s range. The noise....pretty much silent. The most noise that comes from my case is the fans and even those are virtually silent.

Hey how much PPD do you see from those 550 TI's? Just wondering if they are a good card for another system i'm thinking about putting together in a few more weeks.

I'm showing around 22k PPD but i'm not folding all the time either, Usually just when I go to bed or not at home. So i'm doing about 9k PPD because of that. I'm folding all 6 cores on my CPU and my GPU OC'd just a touch. And I'm using my key too.

I'd be having a serious look at that card with those temps. They are way too hot. I take you have taken it out and make sure the fans/heatsink are clean? maybe re-TIM it, something, but if your airflow is good and your ambient temperature isn't in the 40s (celcius) those temps are at least 10-15 degrees too high.

I agree, the only reason it would run that high is if there was something wrong with the card or you have very poor case airflow. I have a 9800GTX+ and it hits 73*C while folding with 60% fan. The GTX 470 is more likely to run very hot although it should still not hit 100*C.

Agreed on the temps. For the G92 card as well. Look at case airflow solutions or, if you donn't mind Leave the side pannel off like I do on my old Dell XPS720. Not so pretty, but very efficient. 1X GTX465 and 1X GTX460 1M and neither see 70c. 24/7 folding GTX465 @ 719,1438.1603 68C at 75% fan GTX460 1M @ 826,1652,1800 61C at 75% fan Sean

Re:GTX 550 Ti for folding

I did some air cooling changes to my case. And made one thing different to give the case a little better airflow. Here is another thing that I didn't mention, the PC rig needs to be queit when on. But when folding, I don't expect that, just to stay cool. Becuase I stop folding when I go to sleep, and leave the PC in standby to record TV shows. So here are the numbers: Side cover off: CPU - 65*C GTX470 - 77*C 9800GT - 85*C Front & Top covers on: CPU - 80*C GTX470 - 104*C 9800GT - 104*C Front cover on, top cover off: CPU - 67*C GTX470 - 101*C 9800GT - 104*C Front cover off, top cover on: CPU - 73*C GTX470 - 88*C 9800GT - 102*C Front & top cover off: CPU - 67*C GTX470 - 85*C 9800GT - 97*C Each test was done while folding the same projects. I let each run where the covers are for 5 minutes and then changed the covers while not stopping the folding. Edit: I just this, when the 9800GT got done folding, the GTX470 temperature dropped another 8*C. Maybe it is because of the 9800GT not able to vent outside the case that keeps the GTX470 hot. Now the GTX470 is running at 77*C with the top & front cover off.

New game plan. After reading a few reviews, it would seem the GTX560 Ti is best suited to folding. Having a high average PPD/W output, second only to the GTX590. And it is still within my PSU handling for power hungry GPU's

I have been using a 550 TI for a while. And just got a second one recently. I used the first card in an HP workstation, then in a CoolerMaster Cosmos case. Very low temperatures sitting somewhere between 54C-58C while folding, producing 9-9.5K. Now I have two in a very small case (Tt V3), with a Zalman 9900 pushing the CPU heat and warming them up a little more. The case has only one Fan. The ambient temperature is around 25C. Both cards are OC'ed @1942 / 2199 Bottom card is 64C and top one is 80C. Producing 10K + I also had to roll back to the driver 267.xx, which works OK -but OK only. Sometimes the driver crashes for no reason (even while not folding) and produce irreguler GPU usage patterns while folding. My overall feeling about these cards: I bought one as I just needed a card in GTX 275 performance level. This was close. Bought the second one to keep them both in a smaller build with a smaller powersupply and use them as dedicated folders. For other purposes, especially for CAD applications and GPU computation, these cards are obviously week, and if you care about gaming, too, you should settle for a 560 TI at least. But as a second/third or spare card in a rig, it's a good shot.

I already order the GTX560SC Ti, so I should be getting it any day now. It will be going into where the 9800GT was. But I also brought my old Pentium D 3.2GHz back from retirement. So the 9800GT will be going into that rig to fold. Soon, I will be having 3xGPUs and 2xCPUs folding.
