How to Stream .mkv files to PS3 using Windows Media Player (help)
Friday, May 06, 2011 3:44 PM

Instead of using the atrocious Tversity or other programs, it seems windows media player works flawlessly to stream to my PS3 and Xbox360. However, windows media player wont add .mkv files to the movie playlist even though it can play them when i tell it to. This means my PS3 (which cant read .mkv) cant play them even though its not really doing anything but accepting the video stream from windows media player. I have a few movies in .mkv format so im not going to take the time to convert them all. Does anyone know how to get windows media player to add .mkv files to the overall playlist so i can stream them to my PS3?

I tried Windows Media a long time ago and could never get it to work either. I found a better program called 'PS3 Media Server' not sure if you have tried it or not but I'll put a link below. http://www.softpedia.com/...PS3-Media-Server.shtml After you install it, go to the Navigation/Share settings and towards the bottom add the folder with your MKV's. Hopefully, it works good for you as it does for me.

Thanks, ill try it. Does it work with other files as well? I have more than just .mkvs I find it really annoying that windows media player doesnt add it to the library even though it is playable. And does it work with music, etc.

Not sure exactly which other files you are talking about but it will play avi and mp4 for sure. As for music, I have no clue. EDIT: If that program sucks for you, I would try Windows Media Center(not player). I remember using that awhile back on the 360 before going to tversity. I don't even know if it will work...just trying to throw out some backup plans.

Works like a charm. Thanks a bunch. The only thing is that its slower than Media player as far as pausing and stuff. But its not a big deal at all. Thanks a lot!

Yeah, the rewind/fast-forward can be a hassle sometimes but I hardly ever use it. Glad it is working for you! Also, in case you didn't see my edit on the other post. If you end up not liking it, I would try out Windows Media Center(not player) and see if it works with mkv's.

I hate windows media center. lol. Ive used it for a few things but it doesnt seem like it was designed for a mouse type interface. If i had a 360 controller then im sure it would work fine.

I never could get those file types to work either, fairly sure its not supported. Always make sure you use .avi, mpg4, H.264, or WMV. Here is the full list...(btw it supports DivX but I have trouble with those sometimes on mine). http://manuals.playstatio...t/video/filetypes.html

The trouble im having is with windows media player not adding those types of files into its own library. Stupid WMP. lol.

Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Convert, Stream and Play HD 720p, 1080p MKV on PS3 (PlayStation 3) You will find a powerful MKV to PS3 Converter as well as a step by step guide on how to convert MKV to PS3 supported format so as to successfully stream and play HD 720p or 1080p MKV on PS3.
