790i FTW system: need help overclocking and stablizing Thursday, March 24, 2011 5:55 PM (permalink)
I have recently built my 2nd tower ever and I am having problems stabilizing and little concerned as far as overclocking because I am a newb to that.  I see from the posts here you guys do a great job of helping and was wondering if you could help me! Greatly appreciated!!

First, if any info sheets or specs needed please inform me but I am running windows 7 ultimate with a intel core 2 quad Q6700 (2.66ghz) on a 790i ftw (132-yw-e179-ftw) using 8GB (4x2gb) of OCZ Platinum DDR3 10666 (ocz3p1333lv4gk). Video card is a geforce gts 250 (512mb). bios ver I79OS17. Im not the best with bios so not many changes made there.

Basically I was hoping for overclocking help and any info on why i get a BSOD "memory management" occasionally when available Ram get extremely low from copying or moving files (not sure if it is soley windows 7 related). Under normal operations she more than sufficent and a beast .

thanks in advance for any help!

Vistahead I apprecite the links and have read both...if you look at the specs I have applied the method of one of the threads and so far so good. it is ALOT for a newb to digest and I was hoping for some one on one before I jump off the deep end!!! also it seems like there has been some talk as far as OCZ Ram... a shame as I just invested 8 GB of it!!!

Vistahead please note when applying changes FSB Reference Clock is not a selectable field and currently at 3333.3, I will see if it changes when I reboot.  Also for CPU FSB I can only select 1.200 or 1.275 so I selected 1.275.  Damn!! late for work but it was worth it!

I don't understand when you say the FSB frequency is not selectable.  It should be.  you should be able to set it at 1333Mhz, and tehn link and sync it with your RAM.  As far as the CPU FSB voltage, leave it at 1.275v for now.

Vistahead, its been almost a year of up and downs and i never ocficially thanked you for your help so THANK YOU!
I have just officially applied your settings because eventhough i originally applied them i was still having a lot of issues do to what i discovered to be a bad memory stick.( what can i say i have alot to learn) Since removing the ram i have had over 8 months of incident free use.
As far a the settings you gave my computer shuts of randomly without me using it before and after windows splash screen. I was only able to get part of the blue screen msg wbich started with nvld??km as being the cause. any suggestions?

If you are running the same hardware that is in your first post, the problem may be the OCZ RAM. Back in the day when the 790i series boards were the latest and greatest, lots of folks had problems with OCZ RAM. The part of the blue screen that you caught seems to indicate the video card driver. Try leaving two RAM modules in the black slot only and see if you can get to your desktop. Have you tried your video card in a different PC to see if it is good?

will do on placing ram in black slots....runing memtest right now on remaining sticks. unfortunately dont have another cpu to test video card :(

You are runniing an older card, so you may want to think about trying an older driver. Some folks seem to have better luck with them.
