SATA III/6G Firmware Update version 1701 Tuesday, March 01, 2011 12:11 PM (permalink)
The Firmware and Software below is applicable to the following mainboards:
  • EVGA CLASSIFIED SR-2
  • EVGA x58 CLASSIFIED 3
  • EVGA X58 FTW 3
  • EVGA X58 SLI 3
PLEASE NOTE:
  • It is strongly recommended that you backup any data on the SATAIII/6G drives if in a raid configuration before flashing the Marvell chipset.  In rare occurrences the raid will degrade and could lose data.
  • If this is a new installation, flashing of firmware is recommended before installation of data to the drive to minimize any issues that may occur after the flash if in a raid configuration.
  • After firmware is flashed to the marvell controller the drivers should be reinstalled to avoid any possible issues that can arise as it recognizes the controller differently after the flash.

The firmware was not designed to run from Windows. Try booting from the CD/DVD and see what you get.

it works now. The CD did notboot on it twice but the tird was the good one. BTW, we should not take care of checksum issue during the upgrade

Shannon: I installed the firmware with no difficulty. However, I have two issues on which you might comment on.

1- When I updated the Marvell firmware, the update is listed as as version 2.2.0.1118. I believe this is correct not only because my computer is running well but also because the Marvell driver website lists version 2.2.0.1118 as the latest firmware for the MV9128, the chip used on the EVGA SR-2 board. Could you confirm whether the 2.2.0.1118 update is the correct version for the SR-2?

2- When the system posts with the new firmware installed, I see the addition of STATUS. That is, instead of [ID] [Disk-name] [Size] and [Speed] , I now see [ID] [Disk-name] [Size] [Speed] and [Status]. The STATUS of my SATA drive is listed as UNCONFIGURED. I interpret the designation, UNCONFIGURED, in the context of RAID configuration --- that is, because my Marvell controller is not configured for the SATA III drives in RAID, the status is "unconfigured." Is that correct or does the term, "unconfigured", have a different meaning?

Does this simply refer to the fact that I don't have my SATA III configured for RAID or does "unconfigured" have a different meaning?

One word of caution before flashing with this version. Go to the downloads page and download the version there as well. I flashed my SR-2 with the 1701 and proceeded to have failed boots. Downloaded and installed the 1407 version on the downloads page and it booted up again - after some time on the phone with tech support.

I thought I had commented on this thread before, if so the comment is gone... weird.

Just a FYI: both the firmware (ISO) from the link here and the Downloads page are the same AFAIK. The FTP directory is throwing a denied listing error when I try to get to other potentially helpful firmware versions. Anyway:

Words of caution: This update will break any Linux installation apparently, and no kernel seems to pick up the right driver for it no matter what AHCI setting the BIOS has, and certainly with all the right drivers enabled on the the .config which worked for previous versions. I hope this is solved ASAP. Epic fail.

If you run Linux on the box, stay away from this firmware. You will be locked out of your disk unless you plug it at a different controller (black ports). No SATA6 for you. I don't know if this is addressed in 2.6.38 kernels but I doubt it, seems like a major screw up. Perhaps a vendor/device ID has been changed breaking generic support for no good reason.
"Once again this can be said only by anticipation of a system pushed to a limit. That means that it’s not yet realized but only virtually realized. This process however, this progress of our technologies seems irreversible expanding today without constraint, for example in what called the information highways, what we could as well have called the highways of disinformation of course." If you meant updating to 1701, yes, the updates do provide some benefits. The benefit, however, probably depend on the SATA device. My Western Digital 6Gb/s Black 1-TB Hard drive provides a good example where I observe a definite benefit. The photo below shows the performance of the same drive taken before and after the updates. For clarity, I encircled the main improvements (in red). The READ rate at 4K went from 56776 to 125871.

Wow thanks for sharing that, i have a barracuda 6gb 7200rpm sata 2 drive and when using everest bench i am getting poor results over 13ms for seek time and only 100mb read/write speed.
I used to have asus x48 mb with the same drive and  had far better results and overall responsiveness around 135mb read write speeds and 6ms seek time.
I will give this a try and report back hopefully it fixes my problem.

I have now  updated to 1407 and did not see any real benifits or much improvement in bench tests.

The improvement I observe was not in the maximum speed but rather in the speed for small (circa 4K) files. The maximum speed of 1-TB HDDs typically ranges from 135-140 MB/s at the outer rim of the disk (disk is empty) to about 50-60 MB/s at the inner rim (i.e., disk becomes filled). So you might have only gotten 100 MB/s because the test examined a partly filled drive.

To evaluate the maximum speed of your drive through the Marvell port, confine the test to the outer rim of the drive, e.g, create an empty "first" partition of the drive. If your drive is like mine, you should get 125-140 MB/s regardless of whether you updated the firmware.

Does anyone know or can the mods find out if the firmware is backward compatible?

Yes you can flash it back to 1407. I too had the unconfigured status and fearing that something was wrong. I flashed back to 1407.

No idea. but i did see improvement with 91x 1401fw latest driver with a 7200.11 seagate doesnt saturate out as much after having a gaming session load speeds are better. I did do a bench between 1401 and 1701 they both vary and are not so consistant until you leave the the pc to settle with read and write, with my tests 1701 has slight faster speeds.

I believe it means that there is no raid configuration setup, which may or may not be a problem depending on what config you want. For me since I have a single SSD on that chip I want the bios raid to say unconfigured cos I have no raid.

The Firmware and Software below is applicable to the following mainboards:
                                        • EVGA CLASSIFIED SR-2
                                        Firmware Version 1.0.0.1701

Shannon: I installed the firmware with no difficulty. But I noticed two things which you might comment on.

1- When I updated the Marvell firmware, the update appears as version 2.2.0.1118. I believe this is correct, not only because my computer is running well but also because, the Marvell driver website lists the version 2.2.0.1118 as the latest firmware for the MV9128, the chip used on the EVGA SR-2 boards. Could you confirm that version 2.2.0.111 is the correct update for the SR-2 board?

This is a very good question and one I'm also keen to have a good answer for. I'm running 1118 without issue so I suspect EVGA have not resourced the time/effort involved qualifying a new revision.

Lately i have been getting alot of freezes bsods with the sata 3 marvell port with a corsair 120gb force gt. I have installed the latest firmware 1.3 for the drive and still with problems im just wondering will there ever been another firmware update that can reslove this issuie or is it a corsair problem/sandforce problem? Sata 2 intel port seems to work fine thus far. Wondering if the mods can let us know

you have to burn it on a cd as a bootable iso i think, marvell need to release a better firmware, we are having some problems on the sata 3 port with some ssd's

i still would like to know when are we likely to see a firmware update there is problems with 1701 firmware with bsods freezing , corsair have even said its not there problem anymore, the firmware is clearly out of date and nothing gets done, also regarding revodrive x3 is there ever going to be a fix with the bios to boot?

I couldn't get it to flash with the CDROM. I ended up having to use a USB floppy. I tried burning 2 separate disks. Anyways, I noticed a boost in write speed for my drives, and actually had a decrease in read speed at the front end of ATTO. This is with the latest bios and driver.

I was hoping that this would fix the issues with my Vertex boot drive, seems to have helped performance, but still get oddities on boot where the drive doesn't detect an OS :S I think it might be time to upgrade the SSD...

What are the max speeds for those sata 6Gb/s ports? Are they capped? Or would they really  support OCZ Vertex 3 speeds? I don't have any sata6 disks now but someday :P
