Big problem, need help!

First, I updated my Rig 2 with an i7 920 OC'd to 4.2Ghz and installed -bigadv and I upgraded the three 9800 GTX+'s to three GTX 285's. I started with the Corsair TX750 PSU, it has one 60 amp rail, which was running fine before. It is the same PSU in my Rig 1 which has an i7 920 OC'd to 4.2Ghz and is also running -bigadv along with four GPU clients on two 9800 GX2's. Within an hour the power supply blew. OK, I went to microcenter and exchanged it for a Xion 1100W PSU, I thought no problem, four 20 amp rails and two 35 amp rails. Again within an hour, POP, that one blew also. During the time the computer was running I was wathicng the CPU and GPU temps and they were all within normal. CPU running high 50*C and the 285's were at 60*C. I did notice that both the PSU's were EXTREMELY hot right before they blew. I went and got another Xion 1100W PSU but I was looking for some feedback before I installed it.
 
On another subject, I have been reading where members have been installing new OS or their computers crash and then they have to redo everything. I have posted on other threads before if you have a secondary hard drive in your computer, put all your folding folders on it and if you crash or install a new OS they are still there and all you have to do is create new shortcuts to the .exe files for the GPU client and the .vmx file for the VMware/-bigadv. Or if you have a big enough USB drive copy your folding folders to it, I use a 16Gig drive. Then you can recopy them back to your hard drive after you install a new OS. No redoing anything, just create new shortcuts.

I understand that twitchy feeling well!!! I have two systems down for maintenance and one of them I have to convince my wife to let me fire back up to use as a space-heater as the power bill gets to her otherwise!

I avoid the wife thing by having the whole setup in the basement and I pay all the bills and I'm not in the habit of nagging myself to death.

I have a 350 watt PSU out of a dell computer, would it work in conjunction with the 1100 watter? What about the additional  2 PCIE connectors I will need for the third card?

i assume that the 1100w psu has at least enough pcie connectors to power the two cards and the board i would just use the 350w psu to run one card anything more than that might put too much stress on the 350w psu i would guess that the dell psu is old and might not have the proper pcie connectors in that case just use some 4 pin peripheral to 6 pin and 8 pin connectors

Thats one of the Strangest PSU fail coincidences Ive heard.
Anyway , The Corsair HX 1000 Will run 3 GTX Duals each with a GPU2 client and an OC'd i7 On a Bigadv No heat or Strain That I can Tell. A 750 watt PSU does Not  have 6 Pci-e Connectors, I think youd need a High quality 750 psu to be reliable with 2 GTX duals and an OC'd i7. The Corsair HX 750 would do the job without strain. Thats what I have for my 2 GTX 275's i7 Rig. I recomend it as a reliable PSU for a Mondo 2 gtx i7 Rig. These folding rigs are as intense on Hardware as it gets, Seems Alot of us have had Failures of some kind or other. Ill be back up with My main rig sometime this weekend and Be Foldin On Business as Usual.

well if you have two poped PSU's then maybe you have a power issue where ever you have them plugged into..  do you have at least some sort of surge protector on it?  or some sort of UPS to make sure you have clean power going to your folders?

Yes, I have two surge protectors and all the power cords are 12 guage. I do not have a UPS. I just lowered my OC to 4Ghz and dropped the CPU votage by a couple of steps and it seems to have helped. Even with two 285's that 1100 watter is still hot but not like it was before. Are the 285's that power hungry? My Rig 1 has the 60 amp single rail 750W PSU and is powering a water cooling system, i7 at 4.2Ghz, five 120 mm LED fans, two 200mm fans and two 9800 GX2's and is cool to the touch and that is with a -bigadv and 4 GPU clients running 24/7.

You might want to look into PC Power & Cooling products. I have a 750W and 1200W and both have been rock solid performers. The 750W I have had for about two years now and it is still going strong. I keep this PSU loaded with the OC'd i7 and 3 GPU's. The 1200W model comes with a single 100A rated 12V rail. It is expensive though.

At this point I'm wondering if I got screwed by the forum member I bought these cards off of. They were not exactly what they were advertised as to begin with and I am wondering if he was having the same problems and dumped them on me. Could defective cards be the problem? They fold with no problem and the GPU temps look normal compared to the 285 I have had for a few weeks now.

i don't think they are defective if they fold okay and the temp is normal, I know the 285 is power hungry.....

currently i have the corsair 1000HX running 2x295 and 2x 260 and the amd 955 @3.8GHz without any issue... but you should know not all the PSU rated 1000watts is the same, some are able to running higher than the are rated for , but many psu brand are not able to run what they are rated at all or even close for that matter, that is why PSU is the most important hardware in the entire folding farm. I like Corsair , enermax, and PC power and Cooling for PSU, and they have not giving me any issue for the last 3 months.

PS: the corsair 1000HX is actually a 1500W psu, but they lower the number is get the 80+ rating.

Thats what I have is the HX1000 its running 3 x gtx260, and mild oc i7, bit it gets fairly warm after a couple hours of running but it seems to be ok, Honestly dont know if it will run 3 285's or not... for the price it should... But hey according to slizone it should not be running what I have...

Thanks for all the input. Until I can afford a new PSU, can I make the dell 350 watt PSU work? Can I put the third 285 back in the computer, plug in the dell PSU to the outlet and connect it to one 285 with two 6 pin PCIE adapters and have it work?

you still need the splice or adapters in the link above, unless you know of a way to have the psu turn on and off with the rest of the system... It would also depend on how many amps per rail and so on... It would not hurt to try...

this is what I used when my system was running 3-285s, two pumps and a multitude of fans- I paired it with 1,000 wt psu
it was worth it it shut down everything at the same time (gpu's) and fans

I like the 5.25 bay mounting. Otherwise it would have to sit outside the case with the side of the case off and wires hanging every where. That would severely aggravate my OCD.
