Free Antivirus solutions - Thursday, November 05, 2009 10:57 AM ( #1 )
I thought I would mention in this thread free antivirus solutions for those who are looking to save some cash. I have used several free solutions in the past and the best FREE solution so far (in my personal opinion) has been Avira antivirus.
Intel i7 920 with Noctua NH-U12P S1366, OCZ3G1600LV6GK 12GB PC3-12800, EVGA GTX 285, Corsair HX850, EVGA X58 SLI, Samsung 1TB 32 MB cache HD, Acer X243HQ 23.6 inch LCD, Windows 7 Pro Retail, Antec 900 chassis

Yeah, i'd say Avira is great. I've used Avast, AVG, and the like... and they don't really seem to cut it. Frankly i prefer Kaspersky... but its not cheap.

As for the Poster above me, it looks like someone is trying to steal my online likeness

Definetly not, but worth the price, got a 3 user license, and it works fine for the whole household, 1 laptop + 2 desktops :P

Yeah. I have never seen such a good antivirus before. It isnt a resource hog, and its very thorough.

Free and works great!  It has replaced Avast and AVG for me.

Which is best at removal?

I actually trust that Microsoft knows Windows 7's ins and outs, besides their 98% detection rate.

Paid for: NIS2009, KIS2008/2010 Beta: Norton 360 v.3.x/4.0

Really intrigued with Windows 7 ability to boot from a .vhd - use and discard OS.
I have one PC system for testing only. Maybe this would negate that.

If you have Comcast internet you can get Mcafee total protection for free. I've been using it for a year now. Never had any issues with it.

KIS 2010 from Kapersky has some major problems when installed correctly. System slowdowns are the main issue and they are trying to figure out a solution. Most loyal users have returned to KIS7.0. In 32 bit Vista, IE8 would require 2-3 minutes to launch...
