I have a single GPU EVGA Geforce 285 GTX Vanilla. Will it benefit me at all to buy a EVGA 9800 GT and set it to be a dedicated PhysX card? Should I consider a different PhysX card? Sorry for all the questions I just don't want to shell out money that will have no real affect on my overall system performance.

I have a Co-Op PhysX and another gtx 275 in SLI mode.  What's a good power supply to use?  I now have a Sunbeam 750W.  Nvidia doesn't have gtx 275 specs for SLI PSU's.  So far, the best thing that I've found is a 1000-1100W PSU for two gtx 280's.  There are other 1000W SLI-Ready PSU's that aren't on NVidia's list.  Ideas?

Adding a dedicated PhysX card will not improve your overall system performance, unless the applications you wish to use are hardware based PhysX enabled. Most physics today are software based and handled by the cpu, but that is starting to change. Save your money and upgrade to a new Fermi when the price is right, and if need be you can always use your 285 for PhysX, provided your psu can handle it.

So one should be able to enable/disable their cards seperately or are they tied together? I cannot disable physx on gt250 w/o disabling my 9800gt.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel, go to 'Set PhysX Configuration', select Disabled, and then click Apply. Likewise you can choose to enable your primary card or secondary card to handle PhysX.

When I do that it affects both cards at the same time. I cannot "select" to disable the GTS250 & enable the 9800GT. If I disable the 250 it greys out the selections. If I do the 9800GT-same thing??? Latest drivers from Nvidia,uninstall,reinstall,registry clean-same results. Havn't seen this issue discussed on any other forums...any help..PLEEEASE !!

Here's another update,apparantly it's working even though I can't disable the 250. I reran fluidmark while monituring gpu usage in precision and it shows usage. I also downloaded the demo for Crazy Machines @- it shows lots of usage of 9800gt  when running game. I guess I got excited over nothing! Fluidmark does have a glitch though,it only shows the 250 as physx card only,not the 9800gt. Thanks to all that replied.

So I am hoping I can get an answer....I am running gtx 260 SLI and they work...the SLI that is. Benchmarks works they test just fine updated drivers all that...everything is enabled but when i launch the game i am playing Rift I get no SLI action. Which I should because Nivida posted drivers with updated SLI Profile for the game....So if someone could please fill me in and help me out that would be fantastic cuz this is gonna make me want to shoot my self.

edit: NOTE I didn't realize this thread was for 290 cards.. but here's the thing I'm interested in adding a THIRD gfx card to my system, either now or later. the only problem is that.. my third PCI-E 2.0 slot, it can only do 4x!  but I want to use it for a pure-physx solution.  A) is it worth it B) technically, will it work??

so, can someon tell me in practical terms.... what kind of performance loss will I suffer, if I try and plug in a gtx 290 into my third pci-3 slot..?  this would be the third card of course, with the first two being GTX 580.  (yes, yes, I know. this is WAY overpowered. by no stretch, do I need this technology now... I just, I want to know what's possible now, and in the future.. thanks :)
 
 
 

I have two brandnew GTX 580. and evemore exciting, i have THREE identical 28" hanns-g monitors (3ms) and I'mgoing to hook them up.. and play starcraft 2 across all three screens, at like 5790x1900... :P

oh yea, I'm also going to use them for professional/production work :) video editing, audio production, web desig... on and on...  that's what i do :)

at first glance, this is what sticks out to me...
$150 is exactly the price point I'm looking @, for a physx only card. and I really like the idea this is a 500 series card - so it will run cooler and quieter, right?not to mention it supports newer, better, faster video codecs!
 
so theorhetically - I have 2 x GTX 580 running in 8x/8x then I have a third card - a single GTX 560 running at 4x in the 3rd pci slot. will this work? how well will it work?
 
and finally, to a much, much lesser degree... I'm curious, is it financially... realistic? I mean I do have a lot of money to spend here, I'll be honest. BUT I'm not going to throw around money at something crazy just for a 7% speed increase..... :)

Ok im pretty new to dedicated physics x thing, id like to know how big of a difference in games i would see if i run 570 with 460 as dedicated physics x card and 570 with 295 as dedicated physics x card, will threre be any performance difference, minimal, significant,major?

Where did you dig up this old thread. A 295 as a dedicated PhysX card?...I guess it's possible. There are not many games out there that make efficient use of PhysX, so my guess would be minimal. You should repost your question in the 'EVGA GeForce 500 Series' sub-forum and you will probably get a lot of opinions.

when using a dedicated PhysX card, will it require as much voltage as in normal GPU usage? i'm using a GTX275 for dedicated physx, but idk if it's sucking a lot of juice from my system. i always assume just using it for physx will mean it never really uses as much power, of course it still takes volts to be plugged in, but idk the numbers to be sure.
 
setup is in my modrigs page with a 1000W PSU, which i believe is more than enough for any system, but just seeing in case i have to use my backup 750W.

wow 3way sli? idk most boards don't have all 16x pcie slots. but from what i hear every board's chipset is designed differently when it comes to how many channels can be opened in any instance. for gaming tho, i doubt you'd notice the difference with 3way sli boards with 16x/8x/4x vs 16x/16x/16x.
 
had 2-way sli before with a 16x and 8x channel on an evga x58 3-way sli le, and the decrease was unnoticeable to me when i got a new board with 16x, 16x/8x, 8x channels. a 3rd on my other 8x channel would have been unsupported for most games back then, so no need. never had a dedicated physx card either.. figured i'd upgrade my GTX275's eventually and use one of them for it like i am now with my current rig =)

anythings that is phsyx capable is fine, drivers shouldn't matter cuz it just uses the physx. drivers only apply to gpu's in sli, physx is just like having a totally separate card.

as opposed to the best or worst GPUs? it will still be way above average compared to GTX200 series. the new 500 series, probably closer, but no cigar. also depends on your RAM and CPU.

so having a gtx285 as a dedicated physx card still means u have to have the extra juice in your psu? that was a question i made on another thread lol. i'm using a GTX275 as physx, but i assumed physx cards dont' suck the full power consumption as a gpu used for display and games, though i'd still like to keep the PSU threshold higher just in case hehe, just was wondering in case i have to use my 750W backup..
