790i Ultra - One last shot at stability - Friday, November 13, 2009 3:52 PM ( #1 )
Hi Everyone,

This is my last ditch effort of trying to get this working correctly, all the time.  These are the components I bought.  I have tracked this forum (at least the old one) ever since trying to get it stable at all times, to no avail.  I don’t care much about overclocking as I gave up on that a long time ago.  I am just trying to get it stable.  I would love the option now since this hardware is a bit out of date.  I guess I am looking for a baseline to start with.

Thanks for the fast replies.  Jay, I just set up your first settings.  And yes, tRFC is on auto.

You are running your RAM and FSB slower that what it is rated at.  It is rated at 1333Mhz...why run it slower?  1333Mhz is about as low as you want to go if you want good performance.

You don't state in your original post what the problems are.  That is something we really need to know to help you.  Have you tested your RAM with Memtest86?  If you are still unstable, test each stick for 6 hours in the first black slot (closest to the CPU).

It's interesting to me how everyone leaves it on 1T command rate or for some strange reason just assumes that setting is correct.

I wonder how much reseach it would take to figure out that setting hardly ever runs stable.

I mean if this is the "one last shot" at getting stable, shouldn't the Op have figured out by now that the command rate needs to be set at 2T on these boards? Only takes about two minutes of research to figure that one out.

Of course it would have helped if the 790i bios had 2T command rate selected by default. That alone would have eliminated about 75 percent of all the initial stablity complaints about the 790i.

Thanks for the help guys, sorry this machine blue screened and then would not post after making the voltage changes above.  I had to run out and just made it back.

Chevell, as the OP, I don't see any value in what you added or understand why you would bother.  There is no way to post every configuration that has ever been tried, nor would I have been able to track that.

Jay and Vista, I am currently set up with Jay's setup from above.  I just realized something I had not mentioned before, I currently have this vid card in the system.  Although I want to have the 9800 in it instead.

    Forgot to add in.

The problem I have always had is random freezing.  It happens most of the time when running games, but it also happens randomly in the middle of the night when they aren't.

Are you saying that it would not post with he settings in post #3?  Did you make all of the recommended changes in that post?

I will repost my updates in a moment.  I have put back in the eVGA 9800 GX2 and it is running, but not detecting the GPUs properly.  Which seems to be a bios resource issue.  I will post back shortly.

I set the values in post 3.  It blue screened.  I am now on the machine after I set the CPU voltage back to default.

I set the values in post 3.  It blue screened.  I am now on the machine after I set the CPU voltage back to default.

If you want to set the CPU voltage permanently (not on auto), look at the voltage in Everest Ultimate (free or paid version) while it is under load, and set that value in your BIOS.

    Thanks for the help Vista!

I still have the problem where Win splits my dual GPU card into 2 no functional adapters.  Should I try in the video forums you think?

The problem is that both gpus are detected, but get disabled by Win.

    Thanks

Hey John, If you are still having troubles with your bios please make the changes below.

Guys he has a Q6600 and the FSB is 1066 NOT 1333 stock.  You are overclocking him so lets just try for stock right now.

    Thanks Micah,

I had noticed that.  I tuned it back to run at 2.4 instead of 3.0.  It was still running about 40 degrees at idle using the OC so I wasnt too worried about it yet.

I have noticed one other issue.  The on-board sound devices are not getting picked up by Win.  The High-Def audio does when I turn it on, but I don't use that.

For the video, in device manager, the two GPUs on the card show up as 2 seperate Display Adapters like below.  (I have a screenshot if that helps, it is attached)
    ---> NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2
    ---> NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2

Both have yellow error markers on them and the devices report:
'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

And the NVIDIA tools don't work, stating there is not device attached it supports.

    Hey Guys,

I went through and did a fresh install of Win7.  During the process I never had any issue, which is a first for this rig.  I gave up on the nVidia card, and have the ati 4670 in it and it seems to be working fine.  I finished installing all my required software without much of a problem (I had one crash during Visual Studio install, a blue screen on ntfs.sys)

I am fine with not using the nvidia card, but I still have no sound.  Since I have a fresh install, I have a couple questions.

    1. Is there still a guide for testing stability?  The stickey seems to be gone.
    2. The onboard audio is still not working.  Any ideas or advice on where to look?
    3. Can I scrap onboard and use my SB card without impacting the stability I now have?
    4. What apps would you reccomend for testing/monitoring my system?  Other than everest which I now have.

    Thanks,
    John

Run the IBT for 20 passes, max stress:
    http://downloads.guru3d.c...1.6-download-2047.html
It appears that you need to reinstall your card drivers. Use Driver Sweeper to remove them:
    http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
    1.  Download Driver Sweeper, but do not run it.
    2.  Down load the drivers that you want to install, but do not install them.
    3.  Uninstall your current drivers through Device Manager.
    4.  Reboot in safe mode and run Driver Sweeper removing only any remnants of your cards drivers.
    5.  Reboot in safe mode and install the drivers that you downloaded.
    6.  Reboot.
As far as your onboard sound, you can either reinstall those drivers, or you can use your sound card.  If you use your sound card, make sure that you disable onboard audio in your BIOS.  In fact, check to see if it is already disabled causing you to currently have no sound.

The stress test cannot complete even one pass.  After maybe 2 minutes, my CPU temp hits about 65C and machine locks up.  I am sitting at these settings right now.

tRFC is set manually right now to 59, CPU and MCP clocks set to auto.  The values seem different everytime I view the settings.

    See below:
    HT Spread Spectrum: [Auto]  (disable)
    PCle Spread Spectrurn(MCP): [Auto] (disable)
I will assume since you are linked and synced that the below settings are showing 1066?  If not, they should be.
    Actual FSB (QDR), MHz: ****
    x MEM (DDR),  MHz: **** (1066)
    Actual MEM (DDR), MHz: ****
Is the below setting correct?  If so, shouldn't it be 1066?
    FSB Reference Clock, MHz: 1100
Place the following two settings on Auto:
    tREF: [Auto] 7,7uS  *7,8uS

I set those settings and verified that yes, they show up as 1066.7.  I missed the 1100 from my testing in the edit of my post.

I will run the burn in test now.

I did,  and the IBT test just finished.  I will run a bigger set overnight tonight, I have some work to do today.

    Whoohoo!

Is the IBT a pretty reliable result, or is there something else I should test with?

Oh I missed your note about NVidia Performance.  No I do not have it installed.  This is a fresh install with just Win, Office, Visual Studio, SQL Server, Everest and Anti virus on it right now.

You want to run IBT for 20 passes, max stress when you get a chance, and keep a close eye on your temps.  Yes, there are other stress tests that you can use, like Prime Blend, etc.  No one test is the know all, test all, be all, but if you pass the Intel Burn Test, you are pretty much good to go, especially since you do not have a high OC.
