Computer only starts trough motherboard, Saturday, August 18, 2012 8:26 AM (permalink)

What would be the reason i can only start my computer when i press the power on the motherboard? all my usb's are working and im pretty sure the power switch cable is the usb 2.0 connector that makes it activate if im right? everything else works i just cant turn it on trough the power button i have to press the power on the motherboard

Sounds to me like you didn't put the power switch connector onto the correct power switch prongs.

Are your power and HDD LED's working? How about your reset button?

If all those work, or the power button on the case was working previously... Sounds like it has just gone bad then.

The lights on your case.

They normally are labelled on most modern boards for which of those connectors corresponds to which plug. Otherwise look in the manual about three pages in. It tells you which pin does what.

changed the PWR LED and it works now thanks, i also have another question my DVD-RW wont eject/work the LED is on it but idk whats wrong with i took out a ATA cable that came frm the motherboard connected it to the drive and to the motherboard, also connected the power and now when i booted my PC up it said it installed drivers for it, but it wont eject,

Just check all your power and data connections. It's possible the SATA cable isn't functioning correctly.

If the DVD drive isn't doing anything when you press the button it sounds like it isn't getting power. Make sure the power connector from your power supply is fully and firmly connected.

All SATA 6 connections are backward compatible with SATA 3's so you can put them anywhere.

Slow down here. Younever answered the FP header connections and it sound like you need to.

You never mentioned your MB p/n but it you go to the manual and look up "Connecting Internal Headers" you willl see a telling diagram. You need to confirm correct connection. some are polarized, other are not. Verify, verify.

If you are about any of the Z68 MBs, go to page 20.
If you are taking a P68 MB go to pahe 24

It should open and close no problem with only power connected. If it is lighting up when you first give it power, sounds like the drive motor that opens the tray has gone bad or is jammed somehow.

You can try using a paper clip or something and using the manual eject button to get the tray open and then see if it will start opening and closing by its own power. Otherwise looks like you'll be needing a new one.
