Corsair Vengeance (2x4gb)?? Wednesday, August 08, 2012 9:02 PM (permalink)
I'm looking to upgrade my RAM in the 790i Ultra. I'm currently running 4 DIMMs at a total of 4gig (4x1gb) at 1600mhz.
I am looking at this kit of Corsair Vengeance (2x4gb) at 1600mhz. My question is, to make these run stable, is it gonna be as easy as setting the MEM Mhz in BIOS to 1600 and matching the latencies to 9-9-9-24? Of course unsyncing from the cpu and matching voltage at 1.5...
I've been doing a crazy amount of reading in the last couple days about how ram works in aspects of overclocking and timings. I figured I'd read up first than ask the question. Anyway, Have I got it right? Or am I missing something that needs to be done to make these chips work stable. Thanks guys...

Link to the chips I'm looking at [CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8R]
EDIT - Ok, I'm link restricted...but searching the above part number will yield intended results...Thanks again!
Don't ask... I'm NeverReady.

Finding RAM will be tough due to voltage.  The RAM for this MOBO is at 1.9v, all the new RAM is at 1.5.  I am not sure how well it will take.  1600MHZ is very tough as well, I have yet to achieve it.
    Mobo/Laptop: EVGA 790i Ultra (132-CK-NF79)       CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 Ghz 12M 1777FSB-OC'd @3.87 Ghz
    RAM: 8GB-OCZ3X16004GK (4x2) LINKED AND SYNCED @ 9.9.9.32          Vid: 2-EVGA 460GTX SC P/N 01G-P3-1373-AR (SLI)     PSU: ANTEC HCG 900  SSD: OCZ Vertex 4 256GB   Chipset: NB 790i Ultra(SLI)    BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 10.00 PG
    OS: Windows 7 x64 Pro

I'm sure I should be able to achieve at least 1600mhz using only 2 DIMMs.
From what I understand under reading, it only gets hard to reach 1600+ when using 4 DIMMs, hence the reason why I'm upgrading using 2 DIMMs instead of 4.
I've even found better Vengeance RAM since last night that would allow me up to 1866mhz, and is cheaper than the sticks I referred to in previous post...

Use the Corsair memory finder here:

        http://www.corsair.com/en/learn_n_explore/

Once you find all of the part numbers that are compatible then do a Google shopping query for stores which may still have compatible items in stock. Last time I looked Corsair's stock for those modules that are compatible were zero.
Intel i7 3820 + Corsair H100, Corsair Vengeance LP Black 32GB (CML32GX3M4A1600C10), EVGA GTX 680, (GTX 580/GTX 670SC for folding) Corsair AX1200 + Sleeved Corsair Modular cabling, EVGA X79 SLI MB, Corsair Force GS 240GB SSD (system), WD 2TB Black (two)  for storage/backup, Acer 23.6 inch LCD, Windows 7 Ultimate, Corsair 600T White Special Edition PC chassis, Corsair M60 + K60, Corsair Vengeance 2000 Headset, Corsair Link.

I am familiar with the RAM finders available on the internet. I have also played with Crucial's memory finder as well. Thank you for the tip! :)
I have read though that this particular RAM will run on this board with a little bit of BIOS tweaking, which I was attempting to refer to in my OP. I realize that my board is generations old, but I'm not ready to buy a new one yet.
When you say 'incompatible' are you speaking in terms of simply 'out of the box install'? Or will these chips not work even with the voltage and mhz tweaking? Again, like I said, I have read that some people have made these chips work =/

EDIT - Not to continue kicking the horse or anything, but I think I've changed my mind on the DIMMs I'm going to try anyway.
I've read here in these forums that people are having success running G. Skill ram at 1600mhz (2x4gb) on the 790i Ultra, so I think that's the route I'm going to take at this point, also noting that it will work on future i7 boards when I decide to make my move into current gen.
I appreciate all the responses I've received and still welcome any further advise. Thanks guys!
