GTX 690 Electrical Noise, Coil Whine, or Hiss? (with video URL) Friday, August 03, 2012 3:43 PM (permalink)
This 690 exhibits a strange stuttering/fluttering hiss during Heaven (even at stock), whereas another 690 I have here is a nearly silent unless you put your ear up to the card.

YouTube Link (Video starts at 11sec because that's when it's most noticeable)

I'm not sure if this is normal or not, plus it's really annoying. Is this a valid reason to RMA? Opinions?

When it's quiet, yes I can, and even when it's not I still sort of hear it. But my ears are very sensitive to high frequency sounds.

It's not as bad as the noise my old GTX 260 used to make, but what is strange and especially annoying about it is the stuttering/fluttering, if it were consistent it wouldn't be so noticeable.

Has anyone from EVGA watched/listened to that video and replied about it? Cant say that would be normal.

RMA that, that is not normal and does not even sound like coil wine or squealing cap.

I was thinking it's somehow due to SLi balancing the load back and forth, but this one is quite a bit louder than my other one. The other is only noticeable with your ear up to the card, whereas this one I can hear from my chair.

Kinda hate to RMA a $1k card for such a minor issue, but I'm certainly not happy with this noise. And I'm concerned this might be a prelude to failure in the near or distant future.

                  Great job on the recording

Certainly sounds like something is up, probably electrical....

Is this card brand new? if so I would RMA it right away... if its over 30 days old the I would simply report it to EVGA and see what they think

Yea I had some slight coil whine on my 690 when I first got it, but that what you have sounds like an electrical pinging over whining. Would be good to call them up, or soon enough someone will see your vid and bump something up.

Was only recorded on a crappy Canon point and shoot but thanks, I had the fan on 30% while I did the video. I must also point out the mic is very sensitive so it might be exacerbating it a bit, but it's still very noticeable in person.

It's a brand new card though, literally 2 days old.  I'd rather not have to go without a card for 2-3 weeks for RMA, since the other 690 here isn't mine. (Shipping time from NY->CA and back is 5 days each way plus processing time)  but I'm not sure I have any other alternative.

When you first got it? So it subsided over time? Or...?

The other 690 I have here is about a month old and it does the same stuttering hiss or "pinging" but not nearly this loud and I don't remember it being this noticeable when it was new though.

I've used a 690 and it never did anything like that.  Not normal.

It's not a coil, whenever those are beginning to go, they are much more high pitched, that sounds weird. Take off the shroud and see if you spot anything glaringly obvious.

that is exactly what i hear coming from the  670 gtx ftw when it get to 50% power draw the more it draws the louder it gets, if boost goes on and boost draws more volts it gets even louder. I will be rma the card i have As i simply will not deal with such noises

Wow... I was thinking a chopper landed in your room! RMA that hoe! No way would I keep something that I paid a grand for, with that issue. Like others said, it might be a prelude to other issues.
