Looking for recommendations on a fan controller Tuesday, July 10, 2012 11:31 AM (permalink)
I'm gathering parts for a rebuild I want to do. This will be an air cooled system. I just ordered 5 Yate Loon D12SL-12 fans. Their rated current is 0.30A. I'll have 5 case fans and two fans for the Prolimatech Megahalem B (CPU cooler). I did not buy the fans for the CPU cooler yet.
I was thinking 4 channels:
CPU cooler is channel one, front 2 fans are channel two, top 2 fans are channel three, the rear fan is channel four.

Was looking at this one: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15089/bus-305/Scythe_Kaze_Master_II_525_4_Channel_Fan_Controller_Temp_Display_-_Black_KM05-BK_Retractable_Knobs.html?tl=g47c17s286
Case: Corsair 300R
Power supply: Corsair AX1200
Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI-3
CPU: i7-950 3.06 quad-core
CPU cooler: Corsair H80i
Memory: 12GB Corsair Dominator  DDR3 1600
Video: 3 EVGA GTX 580's
HDD: 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA drives
Displays: 3 Dell E2210's (5040 x 1050)
               1 Double Sight DS-90U (1024 x 600)

I have used the Kaze Master before, it worked well, doesnt support a huge current load, but for its used within its specs thety are great.  You can also go with Lamptron, they have many models that are all very well made.

Is there any particular reason why you want a fan controller?  Yate Loons are quiet (I know, I have a few Mediums in my case) - you would need super-hearing to be annoyed by them.

I browse SilentPCReview from time to time and the D12SL is one of their Gold Standard fans.  You shouldnt need a fan controller with these fans.

That Scythe should be fine, or the Lamptron FC5v2 or FC6.  Whichever costs the least.  The FC5v2 has more wattage per channel, but for the average user it will go unused.

I'd have to agree with Fiius - with those Yate Loon's you have, they are almost as whisper quiet as you can get.  Their dBA rating is based on controlled conditions.  So, when dropping them in to a case they are going to be muffled even more.  And if you are just running 5 of them - I don't think you'd need a fan controller.

Anyway - I know your question wasn't IF you should get - but rather what should you get - so sorry for my digression.    Personally, I'm a fan of Lamptron controllers.  I have a 30 W/channel controller and love it.  Gives me enough room to grow my system when I decide that I want "bigger" fans.  The setup you are thinking about would be just fine.

I have used both, the FC5v2 is golden, but unlessd you have a LOT of fans it will go largely unused.  The medium Yates, I have some as  well, they dont bother me, but they seem to drive my other half nuts, I think it might just be the wrong frequency for her ears, as Ultra Kaze 3K's and the high end San Aces didnt bother her.  But on a FC, no problem, run them around 80-85% of their speed no longer have the tone or whatnot that drove her nuts.

Might be the same thing for HarryD, him or someone in the household has an issue, it likely isnt db level, but the FC can be a definite help.

The reason I want a fan controller for the most part is to have a central location to connect the fans (cable management). Quietness isn't that big of an issue but I also do not want a jet engine next to me. I chose the Yate Loons because they will be replacing the fans that come in the Antec P280. The case and fans should arrive today.

I wanted some control over the speed of the fans and the case has a front door so I don't know which controllers will fit. I was looking at the Aquacomputer Aquaero 5 LT USB fan controller.
It's overkill but I can install it in the rear of the case and control the fans through Windows.
              Case: Corsair 300R

With your fan choice, you can always use a fan splitter.  SPCR, the website I linked to above, members could hear mouse-farts; there will be no turbine engine next to you unless you change fans.

After looking at the P280, you may want to go with a touchscreen controller if you dont want to do the Aquaero.  Anything with a potentiometer knob probably wont fit right.

The Sentry 2 is a nice one so I've seen...

                  - Secondary MicroATX Z77

I could only suggest a Sunbeam RheoSmart series of controllers (30W/channel), either 3-channel (3.5'' form factor) or 6-channel (5.25'' form factor). not sure if they make the 5.25'' versions with LED displays as I own a 3.5'' one with knobs (no digital displays).

however what matters is a pretty cool feature that you can hook up the motherboard PWM output (e.g. from cpu 4-pin header on a splitter with actual cpu pwm fan) and controll selected channels by that PWM automatically.

it's pretty cool and simple if you want a small 3.5'' controller. I needed this form factor as I have no free 5.25'' bays, only 1x 3.5'' left free, so I went with it and am very happy

I use my fan controller for automatic bumping up of radiator fans when CPU gets under load and PWM starts adjusting. of course you can always switch to manual mode and adjust it manually in 0V-12V range by turning a knob.

I bought mine (3.5'', 30W/channel, 3 channel, no LED displays, mind that) at $17.99 from amazon market, newegg has them at similar price too.

probably not what you are looking for, but posting it anyways as another option.

WOW, that is a pretty slick controller.  Im not the fancy haha, I like the basic function of my Kaze Master or my Lamptron FC5v2.  But yeah, if you like all the advanced controlls, your Sunbeam sounds like the one to get.
