OUYA: A New Kind of Video Game Console
Tuesday, July 10, 2012 7:22 AM
( permalink)
OUYA ~ ("ooh-yuh") They just launched a Kickstarter page and I gotta say, I'm considering backing this for at least the 3rd, $95 dollar option. The idea is brilliant and their reasoning to kick some sense into the major console developers who continuously overcharge for all their games and DLC and whatnot is something I really like! Someone needs to attempt to stop them...not every new game has to be priced at $60+ or give us better cheaper options. For example, and not like this would ever happen on any device, but it'd be nice if a gamer like me that buys an FPS, if I never intend to play anything but the rather short single player campaign, why does it still cost $60, why not make a SP ver only for $20-$30, without access to multi-player, etc etc There have been quite a few iphone, ipad, whatever games I'd love to play, but I don't own any of those devices and even if I did, the screen is just too small to bother. {my left eye is not so good, making it difficult to focus or enjoy games on such small screens} With this device one can play those games and more on a big screen. Anyway... Full article @Kotaku here and the Kickstater page here It's time to upend console gaming. Let’s open this sucker up! It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen. Let’s make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy. With all our technological advancements, shouldn't costs be going down? Gaming could be cheaper! We're handing the reins over to the developer with only one condition: at least some gameplay has to be free. We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town, and many others. Developers can offer a free demo with a full-game upgrade, in-game items or powers, or ask you to subscribe. OUYA: The revolution will be televised OUYA is a new game console for the TV, powered by Android. We've packed this little box full of power. Developers will have access to OUYA's open design so they can produce their games for the living room, taking advantage of everything the TV has to offer. Best of all, OUYA's world-class controller, console, and interface come in one beautiful, inexpensive package. All the games on it will be free, at least to try. Great games come from great developers. Developers can wave farewell to the roadblocks of bringing a console game to market. Anyone can make a game: every OUYA console is a dev kit. No need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. It's built on Android, so developers already know how it works. That doesn't mean OUYA is an Android port. You can create the next big title in your bedroom – just like the good old days! Who needs pants!? OUYA could change AAA game development, too. Forget about licensing fees, retail fees, and publishing fees.

aka_STEVE_b I'd like to see it happen but MS will probably buy them out soon & crush the idea into oblivion...... So does that mean you're in? Seriously though...I want to see how this plays out but personally I'll have to pass.

Imteresting idea. I'm not going to back it only for the fact that I don't game on a console anymore. Ok I caved after looking at it more.

So...it's a pc pretending to be a console or a console pretending to be a pc? Sounds like it's gonna have a identity crisis. Would be cool to see what this project leads though. At least the name of it sounds somewhat cooler than the Wii name.

HarryD No thanks, PC or nothing. Heh as a pc user I am slowly leaning towards returning to my roots. I started with the Nintendo\SNES systems. This project has potential and it sucks right now I don't have the money to help fund it. Don't get me wrong I love pc gaming as much as the next person however it's starting to wear me out in terms of dealing with hardware\software issues\problems.

One day has passed and they have over 600k/999k they need. I am going in, this looks fun. Basically, a PC that is 99 bucks that is a console running Android...BRILLIANT! Edit: 670k now. This is insane.

Killmur So...it's a pc pretending to be a console or a console pretending to be a pc? FYI, they're all the same. A console is a type of computer, it just isn't upgradable because parts aren't user-servicable or soddered on; just like a smartphone or embedded systems. Therefore, the word 'console' is just that, a word that gets treated like a concrete stereotype or label. Also, PC is personal computer-- desktops, laptops, tablets and even Macs all count in that definition. Only difference is the OS and the interface and judge skin deep. Unfortunately, people love to segregate. I wonder if it too much to ask people to let go of the word "console"; if we are computer hardware enthusiasts, we should be about the hardware regardless of origin or use, and not make a big deal of what it is called...

It does seem like a good idea expectantly if it can stay at the 100 price tag. For those of you with android phone with a HDMI port you can kind of already do this. xD heck they even make Bluetooth controllers for this.

I don't need a education on what the terms are and everything. I have been dealing with consoles and computers my entire life. My comment earlier was meant as a joke. Not something that needed to be taken seriously and then debated over.

Holy crap, over $1,000,000 already. Damn I went to sleep for 5 hrs and was gonna think about backing it more after I woke. Didn't expect this and the pledge I wanted is sold out now. Ah well... This is awesome though, as it clearly shows what we the consumers are pinning for. This is gonna stick it to the console developers so good...love it! Looking forward to the indie game developers revolution to begin with this thing...Ouh Yah! Has already begun on a small scale but this is gonna make it happen on mass scale. Hopefully this'll bring forth more creative talent and end the constant release of crappy games with a larger number next to them and oh oh oh...crappy console ports too!

An awful lot of folks pulling a fry Good reason or not, it will be interesting to see how this plays out given the overwhelming support it has in such a short period of time.

I hope they add a thunderbolt port or e-sata for lots of storage. Nonetheless it looks really cool, the single player aspect of it seems like it would be fun but for multiplayer... People are going to be cheating in every game I can see it already

Doubt it'll ever slow down or a solution to stop it materializes. At least we'll be able to have fun in single player or local multi-player sans the cheating as I already do.

It's not the developers that need a stick its the publishers and the console makers that need said stick. If they were not so stuck on themselves then the gaming industry would not be stagnating like it has been for the last 3-4 years.

Also, I'm now a backer of the $99 variety. I really love this thing, its what the gaming industry has been needing for a long time. I havn't been a supporter of consoles the past decade, but that probably has a lot to do with how limited and stagnate they've been/become and this OUYA is gonna change that! And technically you can't really consider this a normal console, since it'll mainly be for playing android games and apps to begin with. It'll allow one to play those games that require an overpriced small screen device on the big screen instead...

Yes but there is a bigger penalty for cheating in games you pay for. In the f2p world people create accounts and cheat and once they get banned they just create another account. Don't get me wrong the open box idea is really cool but I don't think it's going to be a good time playing online unless there's LAN options for certain games

"If I wasn't I female I'd say this takes big balls" I lol'd at her statment. I like her. Take my money. 150 pledged for the console and second controller. On another note, since tha games would be developed for Android once this launches I'd say apple will have some serious competition interms of supported apps. Also, to address the post above me...... give me dedicated servers for LAN play PWEASE

Jaguar(28-nm) > Silvermont(22-nm) > Bobcat(40-nm) > Cedarview(32-nm atom) > Exxynos 4&5 > Tegra 3 NVIDA Tegra is by far the worst SoC you could use... instead if they want to use NVIDIA ARM wait for Project Denver.
