THEY WORK!!!!
Monday, July 09, 2012 5:28 PM
( permalink)
Finally..., after much gnashing of teeth and muttering of words best left unsaid out loud, my USB 3.0 ports are working. My keyboard works, my TV tuner works, my wireless receiver for my mouse, my printer, my HD PVR..., all are working on the USB 3.0 ports. Following the instructions by xtremepcs in this thread, http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1666208, updating the firmware and the drivers for the Asmedia controllers for the USB 3.0 ports, they all work! This is all with my memory set at 2133 mhz and running at it's rated speed and timings, and without bumping up voltages, the firmware update downloaded from StationDrivers seems to have done the job! I had previously updated the drivers, but not the firmware. Doing that last evening seems to have solved the problem. I'm holding my breath hoping it's not just a temporary or fleeting thing, but this is the first time on my X79 Classified MB, and then it's RMA replacement, they work! I heartily nominate xtremepcs for a Blue Ribbon!

manojks Didn't I already tell you guys to do this ? Great job xtremepcs. Just cause someone kept coming in the thread and said EVGA is working on a new bios that will fix it. http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1635450 I sincerely apologize if I missed your post! Definitely a Blue Ribbon for both of you would be the most appropriate thing to happen. I just hope EVGA picks up on this and tries it out. Your efforts just may prevent a lot of disappointment among customers.

We are watching this and testing in house, if this can correct the problem then we can roll it up into a more automated process. Much thanks for those involved in finding this, we actually have been working with the vendor for some time to find a solution...

I finally got around to Flashing the USB 3.0 Controller. Other than some confusion on my part how to get the USB 3.0 stick to be the #1 boot device, it went all as planned and ONLY took a matter of seconds... I now have ALL my USB 3.0 ports working with an OC of 4.3MHz with my core temps under minor loading at 39 36 37 37. MORE than acceptable considering a I did a VERY High Intelburn 20 times with a MAX temp of 67C with 100% loading! Not too shabby for switching to the 212Evo from Coolermaster with some upgraded fans! This allowed me to use the Corsair Dominator Memory with NO issues at all! When I switched the BClk to 1.25 BAD things happened as I was in perpetual reboot with the good ol'd FF code showing... I guess 4.3 will be IT for me... NOT shabby, TOTALLY stable with low temps... I think I can start buttoning up my computer IT HAS been a LONG month to month in a half and 3 MotherBoards later.... The ONLY thing I CAN tell you I would get rid of the Marvell Yukon Lan Chip and go STRICTLY Intel. There is NO comparison which NIC chipset is better. I am considering getting a separate card, the throughput is SOOOOOOOOO different AND better on the Intel....

I can handle risk, would NOT be my first time! As was pointed out by the rather helpful linuxrouter there is still no excuse why the Bios BClck has to go from 1x to 1.25x and NOTHING in between.. I know for a FACT "other" Mobo makers Bios allow for this to happen... JUST my 2 cents yet again...

Yes, me too, i don't care to try new stuff just to get better results (i did something similar to upgrade the firmware of the Sata 3 marvell controller on X58), this solution for USB 3.0 works like a charm for me, the only thing i need a fix from EVGA its to get usb support in bios/dos with my Logitech G510. And yes, that BCLck its a thing reviewers critize from EVGA MB, compared with other MB, maybe in the future with a bios upgrade they can improve this.

I recently flashed to BIOS 37 (BIOS #2 & #3 are on 37 #1 is on 34) and with BIOS 37 I lose USB 3.0, but on BIOS 34 I have full functionality with my USB 3.0 ports. No other changes have been made except the BIOS flash. Any thoughts?

LOL... I'll try this firmware... back in April I tried the April firmware update to the VLI hubs and the ASMedia controller. The problem remained, then, however. As the one who was saying EVGA was working with a vendor on a solution, confirmed by Jacob above, let's say the USB Power Surge fried something while you tinkered with firmware updates... no RMA, you're out of $300-$450 bucks. If it works great, but I'm not about to tell the community to update untested firmware willy nilly, just not my style. Still though, I'd like to see an official solution from EVGA. Never bought a board where I've had to update the firmware on controllers and hubs. Seems like a rather extreme step. I'm glad it worked for some of you. I'll test it tomorrow and see myself as I've had two lockups today + a USB Power Surge notification.

manojks Loaded Defaults on the 37 ? Then switched the settings on reboot ? Ya, that's what I did originally.

Please make sure you do * NOT* install the VL810 Via Labs host driver they have listed on their site: http://www.via-labs.com/en/support/downloads.jsp The hub is controlled by the ASMedia controller, not by Windows, and installing the Via Labs host driver will interfere. If any of the USB driver versions in your Windows Device Manager shows 1.90A or 1.80A then uninstall each of the items, making sure to select the check box to remove the files as well if presented, and reboot. Re-install the ASMedia USB drivers. Double check, because those Via Labs drivers can be persistent.
