Z77 FTW - Need help choosing RAM

Hey guys, its that time again. Making out a build/wish list for the fall. I decided on upgrading my rig again and decided on the Z77 FTW by EVGA. I mostly use my rig for gaming such as WoW, no vid editing ect. Not exactly sure which route to go with for RAM though. I would like to go with Corsair this time instead of G.Skill. Can any of you help me out here? I looked at some GT Dominator series and the new Platinum but not exactly sure which speed and Cas latency to go with. I was thinking 8 gigs is plenty, 16 is overkill yes? I appreciate the input guys. The last time I posted here on the forums asking for help with a build you guys did great and my rig itself turned out excellent. Thanks in advance and I'll be sure to check in often for your input and to answer any questions.

I would go with a 16GB kit as the prices are still reasonable. Coming from my previous kits of 2000MHz 9-10-9-27, i think for gaming probably 1600 MHz is enuf but if u need higher then it's our choice. If you watch a lot HD movies then higher frequency will help, like a 2000MHz with good timings. For me as its pure gaming I got something similar to this one: http://www.newegg.com/Pro...&Tpk=cml16gx3m4x1600c8
GPC ASUS Maximus V Extreme || Core i7 3770K (4.6GHz Turbo) w/ 1.296v (extreme LLC)|| Corsair H80i || EVGA GTX 680 2GB FTW, SC Signature ED & Superclocked (in 3 Way SLI) @ stock || G.Skill TridentX 4x8GB 2400MHz @ 10-12-12-31-1T || Samsung 840 Pro 512GB x2 RAID0 || WD Caviar Black 1.5TB Docs & Storage || Seasonic SS XP-1000 || Corsair 200R  || Dell U3011 || Windows 8 Pro x64 HTPC: Core i5 3570K (4.5GHz Turbo) || Scythe Big Shuriken 2 w/ SP120-PE || ASRock Z77E-ITX || HD4000 for QuickSync || Samsung Eco DDR3 2000MHz 8GB (4x2GB) 9-9-9-20 @1.565v || Crucial M4 mSATA 128GB || WD Green 2TB || Seagates Pipeline 1TB || Silverstone SG-06 || Silverstone ST45SF-G 80+ Gold 450W || Sony Bravia 40" KDL40EX700 || Windows 8 Pro x64 NAS: Synology DS213+ with 2x WD 3TB Reds

Hello Belial, You may also want to check our Memory Compatibility List found towards the bottom half the page, just look for the header Z77 Series Motherboard. You are not restricted to the ones listed, they are just some of the memory that we tested in house and verified to work with the Z77. You can use this as comparison and a starting point to choose the memory that will work best for your system build.

I appreciate the link. Always nice to have and know that parts have actually been tested in the house so to speak. I have read a few forums lately though saying a lot of RAM is having problems with this particular board although I am sure it has to do with the BIOS (and will be fixed soon). I am building a "wish list" so to speak though so this gives me time to pick out parts and do some research. I am a pretty decent tech guy but can anyone explain to me what the difference is with the "speed" and cas latency is? I've always been told the lower the cas latency the better. But whats "better" speed-wise?

If you want to end with DDR3 story for all time and you have money and want compatibility I suggest this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233230 You can look on Dominator Platinum too and Mushkin Ridgeback Redline. I thought to buy this(link) memory but I must find something cheaper. Between speed and latency I choose not to go over 9/10 latency and speed how you can pull with that latency. 2400MHz latency 12 is.... Better 2133 9, for me.

Good luck! Hope it works out for you. Still doing some research on memory and cpu's for this board.

Thanks man I'll let you know how it works out. Based on the research I did, it seemed best to go with 1600 vs the 2000+ speeds for minimal differences.

You have so good price for HW. 90e for Dominator GT Platinum 2133. I would be happy to find for 124e same.

I've run both G.Skill and Corsair in my Z77 FTW Specificially the 2x8GB G.Skill 2400MHz kit and the 2x4GB 2666MHz kits for G.Skill. I've also ran my 4x4GB set of Corsair GTX8's 2400MHz memory. All 3 sets ran like a dream, the catch is finding a CPU that has a good enough IMC to run the higher MHz memory on the market.

I got the Dominator Platinum memory in today. Set up XMP Profile 1 and it booted right up.

All 3 sets ran like a dream, the catch is finding a CPU that has a good enough IMC to run the higher MHz memory on the market. yes, the trick might be using a stronger IMC from a binned chip when running 4 sticks. but honestly, the z77 ftw bios has not been tuned yet for 4 dimm configs at all ... most of us won't be binning chips just for that ... so we wait for the new bios specifically tuned for 4-stick setups. right now I can run my memory (mushkin 2x4GB kit x2, each one is 9-11-9-27 1T @ 2000Mhz @ 1.65V) up to 2400MHz in 2 stick setup running 10-12-11-30 2T @ 1.65V or only 2000MHz running 9-11-9-27 2T in 4 stick setup @ 1.65V. hopefully it gets better after new BIOS. I am not there yet to shop for either a new CPU or new memory kit, it's too early for that for 99% of people. however since CPU binning is a must for you (LN2 benching) then no wonders you can run memory setups most of can't
