Page Filing On Windows 7 On Or Off Wednesday, July 04, 2012 12:42 AM (permalink)
I have a I7 930 at 4.2 ghz, 6gb of xms3 Ram, windows 7 ultimate x64 SP1.  Should I turn off Page Filling, I have it off right now and it seems like games run smoother. can anyone give me any insight ont his and tell me if it should be off or on.

Leave it on, certain programs/games still require it, and will run into errors if its disabled. (doesn't matter how much ram you have)

Leave it on, but adjust the size way down if you happen to have a ton of ram, even more so if you you are using a SSD with limited storage capacity for the OS.

Best advice and what I've always stayed with is a fixed size page file.
        I have 8gb of ram and a 512Mb page file on C:\
I also have a 6142Mb page file on a different drive

I've never ran into problems with my set-up and unless there is a sudden batch of large memory consumers I doubt I will.

Pc's been online for over 4 days, constant folding, some gaming, some facebooking (with some fb apps)

Current usage 3.54 Gb with 4560 available and 862 free

I agree DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PAGE FILE.

One thing which may help your system speed is a hybrid HDD. A hybrid drive uses a combination of mechanical platters and a smaller amount of SSD memory to store frequently accessed data. Combine this technology with a large cache memory on the drive (64MB) and you should see a noticeable increase in system speed where data movement is concerned.

Correct me if I am wrong but any HDD with a large cache memory will enhance the speed of your data thruput from drive to CPU and back because it optimizes the drives ability to read and store data. I read somewhere that Windows 7 is optimized to be most efficient when combined with 64MB HDD cache memory. Don't confuse disk cache with computer cache, they are two distinctly different things. The SSD portion of a hybrid drive is more closely comparable to a computers cache but not the same thing.

If you are already running SSD drives a hybrid drive will not help, they are a way to simulate the speed of SSD while taming the cost of all SSD storage over HDD.

Turning it off is not going to keep Widows from using one, if W7 needs a pagefile it will create a temporary one even if you have it disabled. Better to leave it on and manage it's size imo.

If you have 6GB or more RAM, setting it to the following is more than suitable; and, set it to a HDD if you have one instead of a SSD.

              1000 MB minimum
              2000 MB maximum

I've been curious about this as well. I've seen conflicting information over turning it off, leaving it alone, or just setting specific limits.

                Setup 1:
                8GB RAM, 120GB SSD

                Setup 2:
8GB RAM, 1TB Caviar Black (OS), 1TB Caviar Green (Storage)

                Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Microsoft recommends leaving the page file on.

I just set mine to the minimum 16 mb's, never had an issue that I am aware of.
