computer froze, now will not even post...

hi just wondering if i could get some advice... computer was working fine earlier today. came back today and the screen was just grey. i restarted and went just blue. then restarted yet again - win7 asked me if i wanted to start normally or do a recovery start up. i chose to go for the recovery startup. after this, the computer restarted and won't even show anything on bios. it just comes on with a high speed fan and a long BEEEEEEEEP. i've looked through the manual, but cannot find anything on error messaging... can anyone help? the system has been running just fine for the past 6 months. i really have not done anything different in the past few days except uninstall some apple software... my specs: intel i7 990x x58 classified 3 24 gb ram 250 intel ssd geforce 8600gt win7 64bit 620w psu thank you sk

hi thanks for your reply. i'm not even getting anything up on the screen... i just get a exceptionally long BEEP without anything coming up on the screen. prior to the recovery boot by win7, i was getting a normal boot sequence... thanks sk

There is a small 2 digit LED on the board that will help figure out what is causing the issue.

Try resetting the cmos, and remove all unnecessary cards. Mine acted up awhile back I thought the board was going but it cleared up after removing a pci sata card, and updating the bios.

check all the connections, power cables, make sure everthing is fully seated in the slot, also a cmos reset might do it if you hit that be sure to flash your bios back later.

I'm hoping you didn't build this system for gaming in mind. Could be a bad PSU

hi thanks so much for your response. sorry, got fed up yesterday and went to bad haha (felt depressed :D). the on-board numbers show 28, 29, 30 (post LED). i'll try to reset CMOS and see what happens. i'll also check the GFX card, it has been acting up lately when playing some games (artefacts etc). once again, thanks for your input.

UPDATE. first of all, thank you for all your brilliant suggestions. i had an OLD gfx card lying around, swapped them around and it worked. guess my 8800 gt had enough and decided to say goodnight forever. swapped it back and same errors. so yes, it was my old gfx card which has now been replaced by my even older gfx card. buying a new gfx card has been on the cards for a long time, but the thing that has kept me at bay is my 620w PSU. can anyone suggest a DECENT gfx cad that would run safely on my current psu? i may just need to bite the bullet and purchase the ax1200... thanks again! you have all saved me from collapse :D

(my circumstances have changed. i'm moving country and will not be taking the computer with me to begin with. the psu was from an old pc that just happened to die. to further clarify, i've recently had a kid and believe me, there is NO TIME for anything - it's a "game changer". lastly, i play 1-2 games, that's it (none of which are gfx hungry at all). hence my apprehension about the financial implications of high-end GPUs/PSUs).

Well im glad you figured it out. Figured it was the GPU seeing as you said the screen turned grey then on reboot it did nothing but beep which usually indicates a hardware fault or problem. You can pick up a 200 series dirt cheap somewhere if you want. But you said you were moving and not taking the PC with so no worries there. If you want to donate that 990x i know a person who could give it a home :). Anyway glad you got it all sorted. a simple 850 watt PSU would suffice for you also pretty cheap too. Grats on the baby too. PM if you should need any further help.

hi, thanks a lot for all your input - the advice given here sorted it out, i just started to freak out. i must admit i pretty panicked by the whole situation. i DO intend to take the computer with me at some stage, but later... haha. i'll look into some temporary gfx card solutions and potential psu upgrade as well. thanks again for all your help sk ps. if the cpu requires re-housing, you can have it ahah :D
