GTX 680 folding failing - need help

GTX 680 folding failing - need help Saturday, June 09, 2012 8:53 AM (permalink)
I've had my GTX 680 since Monday of this week and it's been folding fine since I read on how to get it to fold with the f@h v7 client.  This all stopped yesterday when the GPU I guess started failing according to the V7 client.  I don't know if it's been failing at getting a new WU or just randomly during it.  Seeing as most of my folding is done when I am not at my computer (sleeping or work).  I had no problems with the latest Nvidia drivers as I know the old ones had issues with the power saving mode and monitor going to sleep when I had my GTX 460.
 
These seem to be the warning I get from my resent check on the client after waking up from going to bed for the night.

    Instead of Stanfords client, try Jedi's GPU Tracker program. 680 folders have reported success using it:

      I'll give that a try, thanks. Since I can't get the GTX 680 to fold ever since it failed again.
       
      Going to try getting the V7 to fold again to see if maybe I need to reseat the GPU or something. Least if it doesn't work I can try the other client and determine from there if it's something hardware or not.
       
      EDIT/UPDATE: Using Tracker V2 now.  Seems to be folding at least.  Only issue I had happen was I got a display driver has stopped responding and has recovered error after I got it to fold to 3% lol. Hoping it's not the GPU itself but the nvidia drivers and it doesn't happen again.  Think maybe I can't play video games like Diablo 3 while folding since that's what caused the issue while watching a stream.

        Ok as an update. The GPU only seems to go up to like 70C for temps when folding with the fan at like 70%.  I keep getting "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" as an error when using the Tracker V2 client while folding.  I don't think this is an overheating issue since my 460 could go up to this temp or higher and was fine.
         
        Could this just be bad driver software or could it be my GPU? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.  And I am not overclocking my 680 it's running on stock clocks as I have a stock EVGA GTX 680.

          It might be a bad mix of the driver and WU you got running.  Which driver are you using?  It might also help to go to the 301.42 driver, when installing hit the "custom" install, then at the bottom hit the "clean install".  It's not as good as a driver sweeper program, but it's easier and usually does a pretty good job of cleaning out the old.

            Ah, thanks for the advice.
             
            I ended up just uninstalling the drivers that I had for the GPU which was the 301.42 and some of the beta drivers I tried and just stuck with the default 301.10 drivers that came on the install CD.
             
            Seems like the 301.42 driver just failed randomly or something.  Maybe I need to do the clean install instead of having the old drivers to roll back to on.  Don't know, but the WUs seemed fine on the Tracker V2 program I was using when folding one of the 7600WUs I think it was.
             
            Folding back on the F@H client again now on 301.10 drivers and everything has been okay for the past 2-3 days now since I stopped folding with the Tracker V2 client over the weekend.
             
            Also seems like I can fold and play Diablo 3 again on these old 301.10 drivers like I could when I had the 301.42 drivers installed previously so only will tell if anything happens.
             
            I'll post any further updates as the days go by to see if this thing gives any more problems.  Got like another day or so to see if the problems show up again on the fourth/fifth day of use.  If not I'll give the 301.42 drivers a shot again and do the clean install attempt I guess? Or do you think I can maybe get away with just an update install so if things go wrong I can do a roll back?

              Sounds good.  I believe the 301.42 are still beta, so that may have been part of your issue.  The 76xx WU are a PIA, over the last two months I have lost about 50% of them.  They're better on this release but not great.  What really sucked was that they would run to 50-60% and then fail...on top of being one of the slower WU.  So in any event, sounds like you got it rolling so that's great.

                The V2 client ran very badly on my rig and it doesn't like a mix of different GPUs either. Jedi's program is the best and most stable to use for the 600 series.

                  I still have his program installed just not using it anymore as the V7 of the F@H client is working properly and fine now for me.  Everything seems to be okay as well as an update, don't know if I want to try updating my drivers or not though to the 301.42 drivers as those gave me issues as well even on Jedi's Folding Tracker.
