Great Time To Jump On X79 Thursday, May 24, 2012 9:56 AM (permalink)
Between Microcenter dropping the i7 3820 too $230 and EVGA dropping the X79 SLI to $260 is there really any reason to consider the 1155 platform anymore?

Agreed - but at least prior you had to pay a premium - Crazy Good Opportunity.  I wonder if most don't realize the Overclocking Capabilities of X79?

Wow great price for performance! Alot more lanes than 1155, and some really kickbutt chips, if you ever wanted to step-up from a 3820.

              ^^^ Start Saving!

No doubt 2011 is where it's at - Just for the cpu socket mounting hardware alone - so much more robust.  Makes the 1155 sockets look like a toy.

Watch out, EVGA will lock the thread for that being "political". They're so scared of being on the Political fence, so they just lock every thread.

Really?  I mean, if you are going X79 why would you use a quad?  I'm on a 2600k now and might consider a 6 core cpu if it would actually help minimum FPS in BF3, but other than that I see nothing about X79 that P67 doesn't have.

No Microcenter here... just Newegg and UPS.  No problem, I still love my X79 build.

The main reason is the additional PCIE Lanes for multi gpu setups.  That said having used both a Z68 SLI board and X79 SLI boards I can tell you the 1155 Chips/Sockets feel like toys compared to the 2011 chips/sockets.  In general the X79 boards feel higher quality - I get that may not translate into much as with either I would expect a long life time.  But, if you want to work with the best hardware - no question 2011 Sockets is where it's at.

Additionally the 1155 socket is being phased out - 2011 is not.

Next year it is expected to see 8 core Ivy Bridge E's.  Looking at Microcenter you have two choices for chips - $280 for a 2700k or $230 for a 3820.  Looking at EVGA you have $200 for a p67 SLI or $260 (After Rebate) for a X79 SLI.  So total $10 more for a X79 Setup - that's a very easy decision.

I agree, but I'm unhappy that (it seems) eVGA doesn't make a board with 8 DDR3 slots.
