Connect computer to TV
Saturday, May 19, 2012 2:29 PM
( permalink)
Have any of you done this? I was thinking about buying a 30ft cable and running it under the house so it connects to the TV so I can watch movies, etc. I would be hooking the cable into the back of my 580. Any advice on what sort of cables? Or what sort of output I should use for sound? I'm just using the sound off of my MOBO as I don't have a sound card. Alternatively, should i just build an HTPC and get rid of my cable box, dvr fee, etc?

HDMI carries sound, also you can get cables that have Mini HDMI on one side and HDMI on the other. May not come in 30' though. Yes your Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter will work just fine. I currently run my 40" Sony Bravia as a second monitor, works great for movies and other side tasks.

The DVI connector will not carry audio, even if you do a DVI to HDMI adapter.

I am using DVI-D to HDMI cable out of a GTX480 to my TV and I have sound http://www.rocketfishprod...ssories/RF-PCC120.html Hmm... do you have that cable plug in to the 480 that's on the shroud of the card? I think it's the SPDIF audio connector?

I just got my hdbaset device from monoprice and am using a htpc connected to the tv. The htpc is used for movies/tv shows and it works quite well, I do plan on getting the intel nuc if it can do what I want it to do. btw the hdbaset device uses a single run of cat5e/6 cable and can go upto 328ft if needed, optimal conditions of coarse, mine is at 100ft and works fine so far.

Im talking about getting a large HDMI cable, plugging it into the back of my 580, stringing it under the house, so it can pop up from the floor and plug into the tv that is on the wall opposite of my computer. Some say it carries sound, others don't. #confused Anywho, there are already pre-existing holes for the speaker wires (surround sound in this room)

I have a huge cable you can use. http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1586462 If you're interested I'll unroll it and get an exact measurement. I tested it coiled up and it works. I'm not sure if it carries sound but the video quality is excellent. I personally recommend a VGA cable (some salesman I am) but if you'd like to go HDMI/DVI let me know and we can work something out. The cable I have is Pro and isn't some discount cable from a Chinese knockoff Emporium. My 3D TV is my monitor and it has been that way since I bought it. I can't imagine having it any other way.

I would, but it appears that DVI does not carry sound :( Oh well! Any advantage to DVI over HDMI that would make me want to go and buy a set of audio cables as well?

I have had sound com through my DVI to HDMI. I have yet to test it with the cable I have for sale though. I personally prefer to keep my audio and video signals separate since I am Old Skool. I like being able to split, record, manipulate, the streams independent of each other. HDMI also LAGS hard compared to VGA despite having to go through DAC. I can get a cheap surround setup with spit signals, compared to the models that just have 10 HDMI inputs and outputs.

I have a picture with the pins sticking out so you can see if it has what you need. Otherwise I can hook it up later and see if I can get a sound signal out of it.

LOLZ!!! just another reason I prefer my old school cabling. So much more affordable! I'd almost hate to see my cable sell now, in case I ever need one for something and I have to pay an arm and a leg to replace it :P
