Farewell GTX260, you were darn good. Can I RMA a used Ebay gtx260? Thursday, May 17, 2012 10:05 PM (permalink)
I bought an evga gtx260 around January 2011 to replace my 8800gt. It was a great card. VERY quiet, much more so than my 8800gt, and a solid performer.

I dont overclock or anything, but a few days ago I bought Portal 2 on steam during a sale. Set up config options, like turning effects from medium to high. Then on the 1st loading screen it locks up. Had to hard reset. Anyway I deleted and redownloaded Portal 2 thinking maybe the game didnt download correctly the 1st time. After the 2nd time, it ran great and was able to play. Then an hour later while reading a website, the computer locked up and the display went black. When I rebooted to my horror I saw artifacts and strange colors. Getting to the Windows 7 desktop it would lockup.

So for whatever reason the card died on me. I dont overclock and I didnt change or move a thing. It just stopped working.

So now I put back my old 8800gt until I find a replacement. I am looking to buy a new card, but Im wondering if I can RMA the gtx260 that I bought used. I DONT HAVE A RECEIPT, other than the receipt from ebay when I bought it. So is it possible that I can RMA the card and hopefully have it repaired?

Have you tried blowing out the dust build up from the fan/heatsink housing? What % fan speed is it running? Do you have evga precision to monitor fan speed and temps?

Yeah, blew off any dust near the fan, but there was that much to begin with. Nothing wrong with the cables or anything as I havent moved or open the case in a long time. After a look over I popped it back in and no change.

Dont know what the fan speed was. It was running obviously, and I ran it for a year and half with no problems using stock settings.

Reading that warranty link you posted it seems I probly cant send it for RMA, so Im looking at a new card. Cant afford the latest and greatest, thinking of either a gtx260 or radeon 6850.

I loved my ssc 260, however, as yours is now died, i would suggest the 6850 if funds are tight.

For 150 bucks you can purchase a 6850, maybe you like Nvidia, and the GTX 470 are very cheap. Take a look on Ebay or the EVGA marketplace.

It sounds ridiculous to phrase it that way.  More accurately describing what is happening would be to "re-flow the soldering".

But, yeah, it's saved a crazy amount of video cards. Not permanently, for course.  But if it's dead...what is the harm in trying?

Do read through that thread to get a sense for the tips and tricks to it.  But, overall, it's pretty easy to do...and it USUALLY does, indeed, fix the card.  At least for 6 months or so, sometimes a few years.
