SSD boot disk upgrade Monday, May 14, 2012 3:39 PM (permalink)
Hi all,
The time has come to get a bigger ssd boot drive. When I built my rig 2years ago all I could afford was a ocz 60g ssd for boot drive. Well, after 2 years and many updates to several programs on that boot drive it's almost full. I would like to get a 120 gig ssd to replace my current 60gig however, I would like to ghost the old drive to the new drive. My question is: whats the easiest way to do this? Does the symantic ghost software work? or is there annother way? I really don't want to have to load windows7 and all the drivers I use.

use a free Acronis IT WD edition if you have at least one WD drive (internal or external) in your system. it's perfect for either backup & restore (includes automatic partition resizing for both larger OR smaller drives) or connect both drives at same time and use Clone option.

Will that work if I clone a ocz drive to a ocz drive? I do have 2 western digital drives used for storage in my system.

yup, should work as long as there is at least one (non-RAID though) WD drive plugged in at same time. program won't start if there is no WD drive present (or e.g. all are behind the raid controller and it can't see them directly). other than that it's a normal restore/backup/cloning software working on all brands and models.

...but the best option I have ever used is the Paragon OS to SSD software. Took only 5-10 minutes to clone everything from one SSD to another.

I'm using Paragon Clone OS as well for regular backups of the boot drive (as needed, before patch tuesday, etc).
It does not work with Windows 8 but their new HDM 12 Suite will (along with other features of course).

Just shrink your new drive to the size you need (60GB), run a backup of the old drive with windows system image, take out the new drive and install the 60GB section that you just created. Then, you can extend the drive back to its 120GB size when the system is back up and running. It is really that simple.

It can be done for free and with work, but you won't have the 10 minutes copy disk2disk and in the end: both disks are bootable.
No need to restore. New update failed? you're safe. Want to test something and keep your system ready to go? swap cable or change the BIOS boot manager.

Using Windows System Backup features is very lengthy and can take hours on the system/boot drive while using Acronis or Paragon will only take minutes to complete the backup.

however I'd give Cloning function a shot, it should simplify the process.
