MCP overheating... Monday, May 07, 2012 10:27 PM (permalink)
Can anyone help me out here?  My MCP is running at 120c+... Is this a problem with the motherboard or heatsync?  Any help would be very much appreciated.  My motherboard is an nForce 680i SLI..  Thanks in advance for any responses. =D

wow, and it still works??? i would check the TIM and replace the fan with a 60 or 70mm unit, also in the bios turn the fan speed to 100%.

Yeah, well... It was attempting to work.  I placed a couple of fans near where I assume the MCP is.. It's definitely where all the heat is coming from.  I managed to get windows installed.. Is there any way to check MCP temp while not in the BIOS?  I've read a couple posts about broken sensors...  Is there any software that can help me?...

I think the fan speed is at 100...

Thanks for the reply by the way. =D

MCP=southbridge chip, the SPP (north bridge chip) does not have a sensor, you can try everest or HW monitor http://www.cpuid.com/
i would check that TIM paste though, it dries after a couple years and the cooler nvidia used is bad enough with good TIM so when it dries and turns to dust the temps shoot way up.

I actually just replaced my thermal paste, I didn't realize the MCP was part of the motherboard.  It turns out, it was overheating due to a lack of fans... Once I got windows installed, (and the drivers for the motherboard) the heat problem went away..

Thanks for the responses, this was my first time posting in this forum.. You've been very helpful.

Keep an eye on that temp though.  It should not go higher than 90C.
