Any Laser Fans Here?
Thursday, May 03, 2012 2:07 PM
( permalink)
Just bought a 1.3w Blu-Ray laser. (445nm wavelength). It will arrive around Tuesday. Here's some pics of it. (My friend from Cali builds them). You can see that sick beam in the broad daylight! Also it pops balloons, lights matches, and all that crazy stuff. But these aren't to play around with. He has a friend who let the beam hit him in the eye for barely a second, and his eye has a permanent burn spot now.

I really hope you place that laser on safe hands.

LOL. Thanks man, yeah I know not to play around with them. I wear protective glasses when using them. And surely don't use them in public lol.

What exactly would u use a laser beam for other then to cut through material which I am not sure if the laser beam your getting does or not? And I was going to say my cats would love that but to hear its an actual laser, I don't think they would like it so much now. LoL

Be cautious. Locally you have to have a particular license (From what I understand) to even own some of these. We have been having idiots blind airline pilots with them...

It's one of those things you really want, but have absolutely no use for whatsoever.

How much did you pay for it? I find it hard to buy the high powered ones locally, Most of the time you have to order them from overseas places or build them yourself. Its not so much illegal to own them, Its just hard to sell them. I have a green 20mw and a 5mw on my pistol.

Import them to an overseas drop point that will ship to your door. Less questions asked. Similarly, Its legal to travel with guns in questionable ways, but I'd rather not be questioned at all.

Lasers can be rather... fun at times. Only one I've got is a roughly 200mw made from an old DVD burner. Fun for burning paper, but not much else.

I have a green one, not as powerful, probably 100mW. Anything greater than 1W is overkill

Lol say that, until you use one. Now a 200mw green one is very powerful. But they won't burn like the blue ones.. When you get those babies in 1w+, get ready for some burning fun. I've seen them burn flies off the wall from 25ft+. Also to Kanti or whoever, I paid $120. That's what he paid to build it.

In the sandbox (AFG) we used high power green lasers to warn civilian vehicles to back off. We literally shake it into their windshields over there and I would assume its the same effect as a flare gun but its rechargeable. I could easily see a lot of law enforcement uses for temporary disablement but something like this may be a bit extreme for temporary. Loss of sight or limb is a pretty big deal as they are not replaceable...yet.

I avoid any wavelength above 635nm because of the increased danger of damage to the eyes. Lower wavelengths are just fine for burning. IR is my favorite, but I have to watch it through an IR camera to see where the beam is hitting.

Yup, mine's a 445nm wavelength. Just a big wattage, which makes it super bright, and hot. Nice to see other laser fans. :)

high powered lasers can be bought from China. They supposedly leak radiation, so be sure to wear protective gear, otherwise you may as well be playing with knives, guns, chemicals, etc. sans caution. I'd hate to lose my vision due to some irresponsible fun. I'd much rather have a brave story to tell, like I lost my vision by running through a burning building to save a child, and at the end of the burning hallway a beam fell down from the ceiling, because Rosie O'Donnell had just stepped out from the shower in the room above....

Yeah true. My friend showed me some of those, and they do leak.. Not safe, and that means they ain't as powerful as they should be. That's why I only buy from a friend who knows his stuff.

I've seen some of the higher power lasers out of China on dealextreme.com They don't sell to the US over 5mw.
