GTX 680 fan profile question Tuesday, May 01, 2012 6:54 PM (permalink)
Ok so i have a question here about Fan curves and custom fan profiles. Can a fan curve/custom fan profile damage the GTX 680's Fan by speeding up and down all the time while gaming? i just want to know because i have not decided on what fan settings im sticking with yet.

My Custom Fan curve is 30C = 40%,40C = 55%, 60C = 85% (max)

    The fans are designed to increase/decrease while gaming, so I really cannot see any reason why lifespan would be impacted in any significant way.

      Thanks for responding so fast, but im more worried about how fast it increases and decreases on the dime, it can go from 60% to 85% instanly
       do you think setting it to a manual set Speed like 70%-80% would be better?

        You'll be fine, I have my fan profile set to ramp up when i game (45c+) so when i load up a game it goes from 25% to 75%+ pretty much instantly and it's been completely fine, although i am running a 580 gtx classy but im sure you'll be fine either way.

          Ok so i decided to set my GTX 680's Fan to 70% constant so i always get 100% cooling, is this ok for my card?

          Thanks in advance

              Ok well, with 70% set my temps are higher than when i had my Fan profile set, what is a safe fan profile to use?, also if i may, how long have you had your GTX 580's set with a fan profile for? thanks

                Since you had your fan profile set to hit 85% at 60 degrees, it isn't surprising that your temps are higher at 70%.

                As long as you're keeping your temps below 70, the card will perform at full potential.  I've been messing around a lot with fan speeds now that I'm doing SLI in a cramped case, and I have watched one card downclock itself above 70 (just like other people here had reported).

                  the points on my fan profile are plotted as:
                  0c-0%
                  45c-25%
                  75c-100%

                  I have no issue with temps, OCed to 920/2150, In BF3 maxed at 1920x1080 i max out at about 62c 70%. Being that the 680 is alot more efficient you should max out at a lower temp/fan%

                    Ok so i just adjusted my Custom Fan profile for my GTX 680 and max temp i got while running the Heaven benchmark on max settings was 56C.

                    My Custom Fan Curve is as follows

                    10C=30%
                    30C=40%
                    40C=55%
                    60C=80%
                    65%=85% (max)

                    fan speed update period = 5000 miliseconds

                    with temperature hysteresis set to 0C.

                    Can someone vouch for my Fan curve profile and if it needs to be adjusted in anyway? also can the GPU fan Increasing and Decreasing like this damage the fan in anyway at all? thanks

                      Use whatever fan curve works for you to keep your GPU temp below 70 if possible (and it appears to be so) and you can stand the noise.

                      Here's the profile I'm using atm; I had a plateau at 70% before I added a second card.  I upped it to help with the top card.  While folding at night I'm setting the top card manually to 80%:

                          If you're worried, just use the default fan settings.

                          This is what I'm using:
                          0-30* - 40%
                          31-40* - 50%
                          41-50* - 60%
                          51-60* - 70%
                          61-70* - 80%
                          71-85* - 85%

                            If you're worried, just use the default fan settings.

                            This is what I'm using:
                            0-30* - 40%
                            31-40* - 50%
                            41-50* - 60%
                            51-60* - 70%
                            61-70* - 80%
                            71-85* - 85%

                            The default is crap and uses only 50%-55% fan speed on load, so that would never work. dont know why they use such low fan speeds at all, why cant they increase to a more accurate fan speed?

                                  It shouldn't matter with a lifetime warranty through EVGA... Oh, wait...

                                  Seriously, it really should not matter. You will replace the card because of it being dated before the fan goes out.

                                    so even with the fan spinning up and slowing down so fast (custom fan profiles) it wont wear down/reduce the lifespan of the fans at all?
                                    Also yes i bought the 10 year exteneded warranty but i really dont want to have to use the warranty at all.... and for almost $600 im not upgrading for a long long time.

                                      As long as the GTX 680's Fan's are very strong and are able to increase and decrease very fast without reducing lifespan than im ultra happy with my custom fan profile keeps my GTX 680 Ice Cold never exceding 65C Load.
