My 8800 gtx's came today.. Sunday, April 29, 2012 12:24 AM (permalink)
and as soon as I put them in my machine I put them to fold :P

now one thing I noticed is that a majority of the heat coming from my case is coming from my psu. i've never noticed this before and i'm not sure if I should be worried or not since the psu fan is working at what it seems like 100% and has a lot of heat coming out of it. Before I just had my 260 core 216 in there with a 560 and I never really checked the heat coming out of it so I cannot compare but I am guessing the 8800's are pulling in more wattage than the old set up.

so my top gpu was at 78c while my bottom was at 68c with 100% fan on both and so I put a fan on the side of both of them (which is being supported on top of my psu) and now they're at 66c top and 67c for the bottom one. So I was wondering if it would conflict with the airflow of the psu since it blows into the case? (the fan I added) since I don't want this thing to blow since it's the only one I have.

Also one more thing, my PPD on my CPU has dramatically gone down. I mean like, before with my gtx 260 it was at about 21k. (core i7 2600k @ 4.4) and now since i've added the 8800's it's gone down to 16k. What's with that?

Sorry for the long post! Any help is appreciated! ;)

8800 GTX, like all legacy cards, will use more CPU than the Fermi cards.  You're running 2 of them but comparing to one.  Trust me, it's likely to be a nightmare running SMP and GPU in that box (a couple free cores would solve the problem).

and you need more power to run them puppies like around 800watt plus just to be safe

        ...I just had my 260 core 216 in there with a 560...

Hey man, do you mean a 560W PSU or a 560 card? I assume PSU, but just trying to make sure. Either way, it sounds like it's running at close to maximum capacity in which case, it wouldn't last very long folding. Two 8800 GTX's would try to draw at-least 30A on the 12V rail = ~360W while gaming, so more folding, then there's your CPU.

What case do you have? Also, do your 8800's have the blowers that exhaust the hot air outside the case? Or aftermarket coolers that exhaust the hot air back inside the case? If the later is true, your PSU is going to have a lot of hot air intake, trying to cool it off while running at the top about 80% of it's design capacity. Intake fan's for your case won't take away from your PSU, they'll help it.

I agree with asus, I'd look into getting a stronger PSU, and use your current for a standy-by so you have an extra one.

sorry for the confusion it was an evga gtx 560 card not psu. i have a corsair 750w tx series psu which im pretty sure can run these cards

i have an antec 900 (with the side window off because of the huge corsair h70 cooler) with the fans turned all the way up

I see, yeah that's running a 12V rail @ 60A, more than enough for those cards.

Only other thing I can think of is if your PSU fan is facing up or down with that case? If it's facing up then sounds like your already on top of things. http://www.overclock.net/...-psu-fan-facing-bottom

I had the 750HX with a power hungry 4870x2, Q6700 mildly overclocked, it pulled ~500W and there wasn't an excessive amount of heat from the PSU.

Yeah it's facing up, I would never have it face down haha

I don't know, the psu is a couple of years old. Maybe a degrading rail is the cause of the heat? I check in my bios and the 12v rail fluctuates from 12.3v to 11.8v which to me is weird

and I just found out these cards are not overclocking friendly when it comes to folding at home. Left the shaders 100mhz overclocked @ 1450 and fell asleep and aparently i've been getting unstable machines all night with both gpu's. Guess I will only be having them at around 1400mhz for the shaders, not a big deal though.

Curious, what sort of PPD are they getting?  I have a 8800GTS G92 sitting around which I could probably put to use as soon as my mobo gets back, but dang that thing got so hot idle that I was afraid to try an overclock it.

Well my main card that I use for display through gets about 5100ppd and the second card is sitting at around 5400ppd which is not all that bad really. Man, these older gen cards though are very hot at idle. 54c at idle :D haha but actually, overclocking (if you have the right fan profile, normally mine is always at 100%) doesn't raise the temp that much on these cards which is weird o.o

If you have reference coolers heat won't be such an issue when you over clock as the cooler is absolutely huge.  As for PPD thats at the top end of what you can expect from an 8800gtx.

Just watch your electricity bills, those GTX's suck a lot of power

So these cards cannot fold. At stock clocks I keep getting unstable_machine on both cards after completing one work unit. Its weird. I think my PSU may be dying :/ any insight?

Sounds like a video driver problem. What driver version are you running?

I am running on 296.10, do you really think it's the drivers? I am downloading 285.62 right meow to see if it fixes the problem.

I also think it may be because of that sleep mode when I don't use it for ten minutes.

On old legacy cards, I'm prone to using 197.45, but that's just me.

No guarantees, but I don't know why you'd want to game on a pair of 8800 GTX's if you've got a GTX 260 or GTX 560.

I sold my 560 because I needed money but I bought 8800gtx's simply for nostalgic reasons haha well later tonight I will try the older ones. Thank you

Ah.  I'm still not sure if 8800GTX's in SLI would beat the 260, but feel free to try.
