Precision and Win 7

I will post this here also from the main forums. I am running Precision 1.8.1 on an upgrade install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64. Overall the upgrade from Vista Ultimate 64 went very well. I only had one overwhelming issue and it took a bit to track it down to Precision. After the upgrade completed I could not run any DX9 apps without an immediate crash. They were all similar to the following: grid.exe 1.3.0.0 4ace02bc d3d9.dll 6.1.7600.16385 4a5bd9a9 c0000096 00005207 934 01ca53d970ee90a3 c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\grid\grid.exe C:\Windows\system32\d3d9.dll b04aa61f-bfcc-11de-8bab-001fbc00c653 The exception code of c0000096 and C:\Windows\system32\d3d9.dll was common to all. Funny thing is that I could run DX10 games. I uninstalled and reinstalled a game to see if it made any difference. I ran the most current DX updater. Nothing helped and the primary reason I went with an update was because the Vista install I had was pretty solid and I did not want to reinstall all the apps. After much hair pulling I figured I'd try the admin account and low and behold I could run dx9 games. Went back to my user account, which btw has full admin rights, and still a no go. Got back on the admin account and games ran. I was running one in windowed mode and wanted to check fan speed and temp of the gpu and then it hit me that I do not autostart Precision on the admin account and I do on my user account. While I was still in game in windowed mode I started Precision and boom, crash to desktop for the game. I logged back onto my user account and exited Precision and everything runs great now. I uninstalled Precision, rebooted and reinstalled Precision. It still crashed all d3d9 while running. I reinstalled my graphics drivers to see if that would make a difference and running Precision still causes dx9 to crash. I have not attempted earlier versions. Hopefully this can be resolved. Putting folding on hold till I have a method to adjust fan settings again. Tarkus.Z

Weird - I can say I have had no issues with Precision and Windows 7 64bit, but unfortunately, I performed clean installs on both machines running the 64bit OS. The only upgrade was on a 32bit OS, so I am not sure if I can even test it there or not, but I am willing to give it a shot....to see if it makes a difference between the architecture or not.... Also, *which* graphics driver are you using? The latest offered by nVidia (last I checked a couple of weeks ago or so) were giving *lots* of people problems, to the point that some were reverting back to 18x.xx series drivers....

I am using 191.07. On another forum I posted on a reply there said they upgraded with no problems but they were on an older driver version. I may try a downgrade but will wait to see if there are any more insights or a new released driver comes out. Tarkus.Z

Tarkus01 I had the same problem with windows 7 home 64 bit and Precision 1.8.1. I fixed this problem by uninstalling Precision & installing the latest DirectX. No more crashing games like CoDW@W & Steam games. I'll just wait for Evga to release the next Precision and give that a try. I still have it installed I just don't run it. I keep hoping that a newer release will help. I have no facts but just a feeling that there is something that is not cleaned up uninstalling Precision and its something that the upgrade process from V64 to W764 doesn't like. As long as I don't run precision everything if fine exc ept the occasional game that has driver issues. It seems every driver release from nVidia fixes some and breaks other. Of course the older the game the more likely a breakage will happen. Tark

I have a dual boot system and EVGA Precision 1.8.1 works fine on my Windows XP 32bit system but when I try to install it on the Windows 7 32bit, it installs OK but won't open the programme when I try to start it. Prior to that I had it starting but there was no current information on the display or ability to change the fan speed, so I uninstalled it. I thought it might have been a dual boot problem, but I have managed to get all my Motherboard software running properly on Windows 7 so perhaps it's something else? Any ideas? Yours in Appreciation, Jezz006

I have not fully tested running Precision yet with my Windows 7 x64 install. I have noticed though that the precision icon does not show up properly in my start menu. It just shows up as like a doc icon or something. Here is a quick pic of what I am talking about. Anyone else notice this or did I just get a corrupt install?

I can live with the busted icon.

Seems to be the only problem I have too. I've reinstalled precision as well as drivers and nothing makes a difference. Does this mean there is a more serious problem I haven't noticed? I can live with the busted icon. Yeah I see Windows 7 64bit has several problems displaying previews and icons correctly. Maximum PC gave 2 tips last issue on how to correct the issue Win7 64bit has with PDF's. They gave a registry fix that made them display correctly. Also Win 7 64 doesn't display Photoshop Previews correctly like PSDs, TIFFs and TGAs. To correct that issue you need to download a utility called MysticThumbs. So in short I think that this is a Windows 7 64 bit problem and I too can live with it as long as everything else works properly. I have faith that within a few months they will have Win7 patched up. So far I am pretty impressed with Win 7 though. I was an early adopter of Vista and strugled with it on my laptop for several months before scraping it and going back to XP 64. When Vista first came out I could only get about 50% of my software to run on it and as a developer that wasn't good so I went back to XP. I have migrated about half my machines over to Win7 now and have not had one issue yet.

Tarkus01 Precision icon looks fine on my system. Tark Weird. What version of precision are you running? Where did you download your version? I will try and reinstall later and if that doesn't fix it maybe I will try and download it from another site?

Pretty much in the start post for this thread. 1.8.1 downloaded from evga. I still cannot run it without all dx9 games crashing though. Tark

I am also having problems with the latest Precision. For awhile it worked as it should then when revisting a game the on screen display was gone. I reinstalled Precision and only a few graphs appeared ( no framerate ). Revisted game and now nothing. Windows 7 64-bit.

I have Windows Pro 64bit, and the second I try to run Precision after installing it there's a crash. I've never been able to get it to run. It worked fine in Xp64 :/
