My >500$ Game Machine for Oil cooling concept. Thursday, April 26, 2012 10:07 AM (permalink)
Opinions please? Its really kinda a supercheap throw away system with a totally overpowered/overbudget graphics card for the build.
Well eventually be used for mineral oil cooling. max price of the hardware all togehter is 500$

MSI/Corsair based(sorry no evga the parts were all to expesive and I wanted the TwinFrozrII gpu heatsink)
Needs a wireless card since i cant have land line.
Anyone willing to donate me a DVD ROM drive? I really dont want to buy one since i have NEVER used a dvd drive in  the past say 3~4years.

But wheres the hard discs? I already have 2 from my old build a 1TB and a 2TB.(thank god)
Which is why im splurging on a graphics card.
Why the 560ti? It will be canabalized in a later build if i choose to move onto that build, also see the games. GTX560ti most id ever need and more.
Celeron?! Sandybridge DuoCore Celeron to be overclocked massively. which is why theres an aftermarket cooler and a cheap mobo  that has overclocking utilities(go msi?)
OS? I also have a reserved OS.
Case? Not required for this build.  if needed it will be set in an open air cooled Milk crate, huehuehuehue.
Games this will be for:
World of Warcraft
Vindictus(Source)
TERA(Unreal3)
Starcraft2
GuildWars2
PCSX2 Playstation2 Emulation: Final Fantasy XII

Alright EVGAians, do your worst.

Dont cheap out on the CPU.  If you want the Celeron then just go with a GT250 or something similar, The 560 would be such a waste.  Or go with a better CPU to match the 560 and this system will last you much longer.

If this is for an oil submerged system then you need to plan for the long term because you wont want to be swapping parts later. The parts that have been in oil will never be the same again. The oil will make plastics brittle and rubber/vinyl stiff. You're also going to have to do a buch of soldering and mechanically seperating all the connections from the oil to prevent wicking.

You also need extra wire and switches for the power/reset and bios jumpers.  Usb-PCI brackets to connect to the internal headers as well as a SATA to PCI bracket to create a mechanical isolator from the oil wicking up into your hard drive and USB devices.

I built my oil computer 4 years ago and the last time I had to mess with the components was 3 years ago to upgrade.  Build it right the first time so you dont have to deal with the oily mess of having to change something out later, remember...all the wires with vinyl jackets will be rock hard and plastics brittle.  With that said, its been the most rock solid PC I've ever had, and it doesnt even make a sound :)

Erm thanks for the tips, and what kinda wires and stufff will i need?

And i just do want to mention i did say: Its really kinda a supercheap throw away system with a totally overpowered/overbudget graphics card for the build.

Both buids will be an oil submergance system so the one graphics card im just going to get right now and then later swap it for a GT520 and buy the 2nd GTX560ti for SLI when i build my power rig: SLI GTX560ti, Ivybridge core i7 EVGA mobo(im rescheming atm)
Its really all a throwaway system until i can build to replace this laptop with something better, thats why im only putting 500$ towards it.

Sounds like an interesting project.  Keep us posted with the details.  Good luck.

Since you brought it up, now I feel like giving it a try with a cheaper setup, and see if I can overclock it to the max.  Maybe toss in my 6990s when I get 7990 replacements.   Maybe go z77 or AMD for cheaper parts.

          Oil coolers are pretty easy.
Theyre basically open air machines dunked in oil thats being cycled through a liquid cooling raditor.
pretty easy, you can use Mineral oil, Canola or Vegetable oil. and you just drop the liquid pump in the oil and lead a tube out to your rad, and let the outlet tube drop the cooled oil into the bottom of the tank
          "heat rises" you know?

Canola oil is roughly 6times more thermally conductive than air.
          Air: 0.03(rounded)
          Canola Oil: 0.18(rounded)

Also you need 2x the pumps for oil vs water. but they dont need all the tubing and closed loops and resivoirs because youre going to be drawing right from you computers oil enviroment.

That way you have a literal 100% cooling surface coverage. the entire system is incontact with a cooling surface. Just dont drop the mechanical or optical drives in the oil.

I've read that getting purified mineral oil is probably the best way to go.  It doesn't need to be changed as frequent as Canola or cooking oils.

Yeah mineral oil is best and thats what im going with on my super build tht im gonna drop 2000$+ on(3way SLI ivybridge i7)

Im going to be using pure canola oil for this one though, its the 2nd best oil coolant.
Its half the price of mineral oil.
Its about 20$ a gallon for mineral and its not as avaible
10$ a gallon at walmart for canola http://www.walmart.com/ip/Crisco-Pure-Canola-Oil-1-gal/10308161
              http://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Canola-Oil-1-gal/13281828?findingMethod=Recommendation:wm:RecentlyViewedItems 8$ a gallon here...
               cheap first then expesive later.

You're going to need all the wires/connectors to remote mount the power/reset momentary switches and either a switch or a jumper header for the bios. You can solder the power and HDD led's directly to the mobo though.

DO NOT use organic oils, they will only last you about 2 weeks before it starts getting rancid and smelly from the heat cycles.  Use mineral oil, its more expensive but you only have to buy it once, it never goes bad and you can use it for your other system later on. Just take care to keep it clean by covering the top of the tank to prevent dust from getting in.  I've used the same oil for 4 years and its still crystal clear just by mounting a coffee filter on the outlet of the radiator.

I bought 6 gallons from www.steoil.com  70T technical grade white mineral oil, its the lightest weight they have.

Just keep in mind that although air is not as thermally conductive, a ton more of it moves through your heatsinks at any given moment when compared with liquids. Worse, the oil is going to be even slower moving than other liquids.

In order to cool the same, you either need A.) a ton of oil: put this PC in a big aquarium, or B.) a decent flow of oil around heatsinks.
