I think my HP MediaSmart EX495 died... Saturday, April 14, 2012 4:50 PM (permalink)
Any thoughts?

Here is the deal. For my home network I installed it a few years ago and works great. I have a 2TB drive backing up the other two main drives in the server. So it is redundant.

For a few weeks now (No time to diagnose till today) I have to re-start the box so I can gain access to it. But as soon as I select anything inside the console that has to do with backing up, the server freezes. Regardless if I have the Backup drive in or not (Thought I would try).

Is it dead?

If so can I buy another server box and simply install these three drives and get back to normal? I have the server for a reason. To store all our videos, etc and access them from any computer/pad/TV... And save all our files.

I doubt it's broken if it's at least booting. There may be a device driver or issues with fstab? Consider looking through any diagnostic information it can provide. All else fails... put an actual linux distro on it ^_^

      Cool! OK...
Noob Alert... What is linux distro and can I safely add it without losing any of my data?

I finally got this error from the server...

WHS no wonder LOL. however that does work to your advantage you can pop it into any windows PC and access the data that was saved on the drive provided it isn't dead.  I'd run a full scan on each HDD from another PC and see if they turn up anything.

Looking for cheap web hosting?  PM me for more info.

That's a traditional Chinese truetype font that's missing from your embedded server OS instance. At any rate, I would HIGHLY consider moving away from any windows-based file server platform. I use FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org/) with amazing results. I highly recommend it. So, is your data still accessible at this point? How do you normally browse to it? UNC Path (ie. \\sharename\foldername ) or web-browser based file management?

Use the DOS disk of Western Digital Data Diagnostic or pull the drives out and scan it on your computer. WHS is not that good for home servers. Free linix is better. I use SAMBA on Ubuntu 10.4

I will look at this in a few days (Hard to during the week). And I am NOT an expert with these little servers... I just plop in the DVD and follow the instructions.

I can access everything on the server for about 1 moment after a reboot. Then it locks up and I no-longer have access till I re-boot the server again... We access it through its log in panel or the folder we have saved on our desktop after entering our particular computer name and password...

OK... Finally had some real time to work on this...

Normally I simply turn on any computer that we have given a log in to, log in, and have access to the folders I have selected those said computers to have access to...

Now I pulled the 2TB Main Backup drive from the NAS, Windows sees it in the Device manager and says it is functioning normal. However, I am a noob at this. And cannot find a way to see the darn drive. My other two HDD's are RAID 0... 500GB each, called Volume0...

                      1. I am fine with throwing away the idiotic HP NAS and simply building a better setup.
                      2. Or even just add the main backup to one of my computers for now so I can have access to all the data on it.
How do I do either? I do use Carbonite backup, so for now option 2 would be best as I like to learn about things as I build them...

Thank you all for all of your help!

you need to right click that volume and mark as active or change drive letter is all.  Kinda odd it didn't do that for ya.  Should be that simple.
