Windows 8 Consumer Preview Saturday, April 14, 2012 3:30 PM (permalink)
Anyone else enjoying this? I've updated my drivers and am waiting for BF3 to download but so far pretty happy with the speed and fluidity of the system. Its good to be back on a 64bit platform :-) Any of you guys running it?

Im not really sure what all the bad hype is all about, but i have been running win8 since the developer preview and love it. Its pretty solid over all. I have only ran into silly issues like older hardware not working correctly, but thats to be expected. Over all i love it, and play bf3 with it everyday!

Don't find it can do one thing better than W7.

I used it in a cyber defense competition (http://www.wrccdc.org) and it worked pretty well. As for normal functionality... it feels just like a skinned Windows 7 with a few added features.

          Changelog for build 8064:

          • A new wallpaper (5th generation)
          • A new BSOD (2nd generation) (back to blue with a smiley : ( )
          • A new bootscreen (2nd generation) (betta fish is gone)
          • A new installprep and WinPE look. (5th generation)
          • Internet Explorer 10 Developer Preview (pre release version) (with Internet Explorer 10 splashscreen)
          • A new colored "Windows" splashscreen during installprep loading file.
          • Immersive Remote Desktop (old)
          • Immersive Control Panel (old)
          • WinStore (old)
          • Windows 7 wallpaper deleted
          • New WiFi/Ethernet icons (old)
          • New Touch Keyboard icon
          • New genuine center (old)
          • Windows DVD Maker gone
          • Windows Media Center gone
          • New User avatar
          • New Advanced Security Setting tab (old)
OLD = Present in 80xx build

Windows 8 in general proposed the following changes:

          I/O:

          1. Queuing of multiple file when copying with more control with ability to pause and resume each file being copied or moved. Users can also view the source or destination folder while the process is running.

          2. Windows 8 will feature enhanced real-time information on how long it will take to copy a file unlike the crappy clocks of previous versions of Windows. Users will be able to see operational graphs, transfer speeds as well.

          3. Also if your files conflict while copying there is a better way to handle it in Windows 8.

          Hybrid Boot:

Now this is one of the most revolutionary changes that will come about with Windows 8 -  the Hybrid Boot support. This feature will combine the shutdown and hibernate process of earlier version of Windows thus booting Windows in 8 to 10 seconds on supported machines.

          New Task Manager

Windows 8 will come with a revolutionary new Task Manager. The Task Manager will have two kind of views, simple and advanced. In simple view you will be able to see list of running applications and an end task button to simply kill a running task but if you want an in-depth look on all the processes running on your system you can switch to the advanced view.
As there is so much to talk about the new Task Manager we will cover all its features in one of our upcoming posts on Windows 8.

          Windows Store

Microsoft has confirmed an official Windows Store with the launch of Windows 8 Developer Preview. Similar to Apple’s Mac store, users will be able to buy or download Metro Style Applications for Windows 8. As the Windows Store has not yet launched there is nothing much we can say about it but yes it promises to be pretty cool.

          USB 3.0 Support

Windows 8 will support USB 3.0 and thus the entire machine which has the necessary hardware can now enjoy faster copy/move operations.

          ARM CPU Support

With Windows 8 Microsoft will support ARM processors apart from Intel architecture.
This is not all, there are many more interesting features in Windows 8. If you want to try them for yourself you can always download and install the developer preview as a virtual machine using Virtual Box.

          Windows Live ID Integration

With Windows 8 you could now move to clouds. With this new feature you can integrate your local account with Windows Live ID account and synchronize your data online. Undoubtedly it’s one of the remarkable features as it ensures that whether your system crashes or you lose your device, all your data will be safe and secure.

And Finally... this last one I'm not so keen on; for if you cause ANY operating system to become unstable, having a kernel panic, BSOD, etc... a real power user/admin would be able to fix it without having to format like a nooblet. My personal opinion granted.

          Easy Factory Restore

While I was using Windows Developer Preview I messed up some settings here and there, and thus my Windows 8 started having constant hiccups while functioning. As I had no idea how to fix the problem I decided to try the all new recovery options that came bundled with the new OS called Refresh and Reset? Using both the options you can restore your windows to a state just after it was installed. The former keeps the user files and settings intact but the latter gives you a clean platter to start again.
Thus no more formatting your computer now. Windows just got a little smarter.

I'd be curious if it was more resource hungry than previous versions.

From my use and what has been said, and that it is designed to run on tablets, it seems to make better use of and not be resource hungry.

quicker recovery when a rare process or Explorer - almost none with the CP version.
IE10 is much more responsive and does not have any of the issues I had with IE9
Prefer it over 7 - just keep out of Metro (hot key to switch to/from)
June could see an RC release but I don't see the need to wait.
Using Setup over Windows 7 with DP was not a good idea, had some issues, so pull your system and allow for a clean install using the ISO (or set aside a partition on your current boot drive, not an option probably if using SSD)

I am sure it is solid and everything but from my point of view it looks like an OS meant for a phone. The start menu change, organization of "apps" it sounds like a big version of the windows OS for phones that is out now. I think I will be sticking with 7 for a longgg time.

Win7? Heck. I would still be running 2000 Professional if M$ hadn't dropped support for it.

That was the ONLY OS that I've dealt with that could run Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, DFS, and CIFS shares... and STILL remain under 300MB of RAM usage.

I meant still supported, everyone along with myself knows that OS was the best! Though people smelled millennium edition, vomited everywhere and cursed anything with the number 2000.

New task manager is cool. New options for folders and stuff is pretty cool. But no matter how much cool stuff is in Windows 8, metro UI alone will be a no buy. Apps are not programs....STOP CALLING THEM APPS PEOPLE!!!!!

it's a very good OS if you ignore all the metro stuff that I've tied to like but can't. it has faster booting, better superfetch, and overall just faster. a fresh install of win8 is faster than a fresh install of win7 in my experience.

I was going to make my own thread on this but decided to just do it here......

I put the latest build of Win 8 on my new build X79 and ABSOLUTELY HATED IT !!!!

Sure it's smooth but it looks so retro 'my 70's show ' or something ??  very confusing to do even the simplest of tasks. I realize it's part of the learning procedure and all for a 'new' OS  but I didn't care for it at all.

It would probably be alot better if I had a touch screen monitor  ( like a big smartphone ) sitting on my desk but i don't.
I recall back to a previous statement of mine - MS should make a  'gamer' SKU for their OS  for people who don't want the huge APP windows- touchscreen look to their PC !!

If the metro interface and win8 is the future of OS's - then PC is dead to me.  LOL

Depending on what keyboard, but just hit Windows Start key or one of the special keys on a MS keyboard takes me to the standard Windows desktop, same as always.
On the Metro Start screen I went and control click and remove from Start all but essentials - which did take time - would like to "turn off" or disable but setting a file type to use a program you would normally and not one of the new Metro which are dumbed down garbage and that lock into full screen or split screen.
I'll be curious to see the RC come June. I could not go back to 7, just can't.
I wish IE10 was RC or offered to Windows 7 as I don't like Chrome and FF 12 is now okay but not always.

I am using it on my test system at work.  I am ok with it but not very happy with the direction it is going with metro and all.  I edited the registry to work more like win 7 though.  :)  I guess that is because I like my desktop to run like a desktop instead of a tablet.  Now as for a tablet, once they release the final arm version you can bet on it that it will be on my Transformer TF300 once it is downloadable from Technet.

if you want it to work like windows 7 then well use windows  7 dont use windows 8 and hack  it to run  like it.  and besides the desktop runs like windows 7 already besides the fact no start menu has been replaced  by the start screen.

I do run Windows 7.  The only reason I use 8 is because since I work at a Technology company that develops software, we need to see how it runs on any new OS that our customers could use in the future.  That is why it is on my test machine.  For testing.  :)
