Why can't we just get one standard width to height ratio?

I mean standard HD (16:9 I think) or what ever resolution movies are filmed in. 4:3 is to narrow of a view of course. Maybe I'm just speaking from a frustrated consumer POV but I've got a 1920x1200 monitor (purchased about 2 years ago when I was relatively uninformed on tech) and am now stuck with some very annoying black bars above and below my screen when ever I watch youtube vids or other 1080 recordings. Idk, to me it just seems weird that there is no standard width to height ratio. That's off topic and not discussing your thread. Back on topic, what is the actual purpose of such a high res monitor?

yea I prefer 16:9 as well, thats why I have 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200, don't have to worry about black bars around movies and such Others like 1200 for the extra space to work with on the desktop, all depends on the user. anyway the actual purpose of monitor this big would be great for 3d animation work, photoshop work, video editing, etc or wants to play games at that resolution. It would definately be horrible for full screen movies though unless you don't mind watching it in a window just like you see in the preview image above, that resolution is like 4 x 1920x1080 screens in 1, so you have 3/4 extra space to work with.

movies get recorded at whatever the director wants to record in, 16x9 came in as a standard to minimize lack bars among all common aspect ratios, it really was not ment to be a standard to make content in that ratio. 16*10 is a far better work space resolution then 16*9, a 24 in 1920*1200 can have 1 to 1 scailing of two sheets of computer paper, it can allow you to work on 16*9 content with your toolbar still there. Its just better for work. Personally I wish the 16*10 standard would come back. I would prefer to spend 200 bucks on a monitor instead of 300 due to lack of supply due to lack of demand.

My 30" Dell feels more and more being undersized. Paid under 1000 Euro for it. But for an increase of 6" a price tag of $33.000? Can't see a benefit personally. My next upgrade should be at least 40".

Taking bets this uses four DVI inputs. Only Eyefinity 2x2L can game with it.

The picture shows the monitor being hooked up by 2 DisplayPorts. So it probably was 2 GPUs with one DisplayPort from each. That's my guess.

I wonder if current gpu's are limited to 2560x1600 - seems like you can have two 27-30" displays now - or that could be per dual-link DVI or Display Port? and need 1.5GB+ VRAM each to function. GTX 690 w/ 4-6GB monster.

Another possibility is if they are using a connection that has not been released yet. Either way, my 1600p is more than enough let alone 2160p. Really only necessary for a display that is around 60".

Eru_JRRT Why can't we just get one standard width to height ratio? 16:9 isn't the standard cinematic ratio, not that there is really a "standard". I think it's often 1.83:1 or something like that. This display would be roughly 2:1 which is nicer for cinematics. What I really want to have is a standard for measuring ratios :P

2560x1600 is one ports limit. not the limit a gpu can output. It takes 2 dual link dvi or 2 DP to work. Every GPU with those output options on the back can do it.

Ah, so it's Eyefinity 2x1L or 2x1P then. 2x1 span modes on NVIDIA Geforce side went away with XP. Largely useless to NVIDIA users unless you're doing desktop only work. Any modern AMD GPU can use it to game with though using Eyefinity.

GTX 690 w/ 4-6GB monster. Since the NVIDIA 400-series and AMD 6000-series the GPU maximum pixel limits are 16k x 16k. The issue is not GPU processing limitations but rather port bandwidth limitation. Only DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a have the bandwidth to push the pixel counts this display has through a single cable. This LCD seems to be two seamless LCDs within the same case. The two port requirement limits it's usefulness. This is pretty standard for 4kHD though to use multi-port to be able to push the pixel count. This is where AMD really shines compared to NVIDIA. NVIDIA Geforce only does 3x1 span mode while AMD does 2x1, 3x1, 4x1, 5x1, 2x2 and 3x2 span modes. 4kHD typically uses two or four ports input. That'll soon change with more wide spread DisplayPort 1.2 adoption though. You'll note the NVIDIA 600-series will have one DP 1.2 port standard on cards. This opens the plausibility of single port 4kHD ability now to everyone. I see no motivation for display manufacturers to push 4kHD to consumers though. They're still milking 1080p for all it's worth and 1600p is solidly price fixed at $1k+.

i say we need 21:9 format monitors already hehe. even wider so that movie experience will be freaking awesome! and you could almost do gaming without needing monitors in surround. philips has a 21:9 2560x1080 screen out there, would love to get my hands on one, just i'm sure PC support for that particular res would be crap.
Looking for cheap web hosting? PM me for more info.
