GTX 580 Screw issues Saturday, April 07, 2012 4:11 PM (permalink)
Now, I'm undertaking the tedious task of stripping my computer bare and cleaning every inch of it - something that's long overdue. Here comes the issue: on one of my 580's (the one I purchased relatively recently) one of the screws was already damaged prior to me handling the card. The screw in question is one of the seven used to remove the fan shroud which of course must be removed if the internals of the card are to be thoroughly cleaned. I know for a fact the screwdriver I'm using is the correct type and size due to the fact I easily removed and re-installed my other 580's fan shroud as well as the remaining 6 screws on the card I'm having issues with.

So essentially I'd like to know if there are any solutions to my problem as this card really does need to be cleaned! Furthermore, this single screw negates any potential for overclocking and will no doubt affect price of the card should I choose to sell it.

Thanks.

When you say that the screw is damaged do mean its stripped thus making it impossible to unscrew it?

It's not completely stripped but it's at a point whereas my current screwdriver won't rotate the screw a single degree.

I would remove the troubled screw as carefully as possible and not reuse it because there is no way to get the shroud cover off(without damaging it) unless you remove all of the screws(but you already know that).

Worse case, you can't remove the screw thus you can only reply on blowing the dust out using a can of compressed air/air compressor/Metro Datavac/etc.

I'm going to remove the screw - that's a certainty - just not sure how as I currently don't have the means in which to do so, ah well, I shall improvise.

Also, I'm just wondering if there's a specific place where I can get a replacement screw.

Maybe EVGA can you send you a new one via letter mail? Its worth a shot. You might be able to find one with the same size and threading but I do not know if you will be able to find an exact match to the screw at a local hardware store.

True. I wouldn't mind an EVGA techie to chime in on this, especially regarding a new screw - I'll happily cover the shipping cost if need be. I just want a card with all of the screws in good condition.
