What happened, actually, is that the landlord got the property foreclosed on, which went through on March 1st. He purposefully didn't tell us about it, and even admitted to my fiance about it. We're currently working on getting the deposit back, PLUS the 1 week of rent payment that he accepted before we found out about the foreclosure, for the week AFTER the foreclosure went through (in other words, we paid him 2 weeks of rent, one of which happened to be the week after he lost ownership of the property). So we've been dealing with Fannie Mae since March 1st. We're currently speaking with them about the stuff for what they call "cash for keys", which they deal with us since we're the tenants in the residence at the time of foreclosure. Dealing with that is a PITA all on it's own cuz the guy handling stuff is a young, pompous, know-it-all prick of a turd. Aside from that, we've been dealing with problem after problem after problem already with this new place and the landlord here. First off, the guy doesn't know how to write up a rental agreement/lease contract for crap, then on top of that there are tons of maintenance issues with the place (even though he said the place was going to be ready by April 1st). The latest and greatest thing, well that's to do with move-in costs and rent. The agreement we had, for move in costs, was a 2-part requirement. Part 1: get utilities in our names and present him with proof, part 2: pay a $400 deposit. Once we do that, we get the keys and that's it, but we can't move in until April 1st, cuz that's the date our lease begins. We got a phone call this morning from him, stating we're late with paying our first month's rent. WHAT?! He even admitted, today, to having left that out of the move-in costs by accident, and is now trying to lay claim to it anyway. Yeah, well, that's not what the contract says and that's not what's going to happen. He didn't clean this place at all; he didn't do a move-out inspection with the former tenants; and despite him telling us that he got an health and safety inspection done, per my request (2 weeks prior to us signing the lease, I requested this as a requirement before we'd sign anything), we're going to have to call the inspector ourselves tomorrow because not only did he tell us that he got an inspection done and passed just fine, but he has yet to present us with any information confirming this, and we keep finding tons of things that he tried to just cover up (hoping we'd never see it). Holes in floors, a big mouse problem, a rotting roof and dining room ceiling, all kinds of stuff. He's only used to tenants who don't care about themselves and who don't know their tenant's rights, but that's where he really screwed up, because we DO care about ourselves and our family, and we DO know our rights. Oh, and the old place was loaded with black mold problems, a rotting bathroom floor (due to the leaky shower they "installed") amongst bad wiring and many other issues. Friggin' place is a death trap, seriously, and we're even very well convinced that the mold issues we discovered contributed to the deaths of Thumper and Socrates (who is my fiance's pet rat that passed away last year), because both got sick prior to passing away, and when we finally got to moving day, we found that the mold problem we'd notified the landlord about had gotten much, much worse. So, we're dealing with a table full of full plates, to put it lightly. Will update this asap. Thanks for your support!
