So, moving day is today... Sunday, April 01, 2012 12:58 AM (permalink)
That's right.  We're finally moving to the new place today.  The people who lived there before, disgusting people, and I mean they could only be worse if they were hoarders or something.  Even worse, the landlord hires a cleaning service company to come in and clean everything before new tenants look at his rentals, and they basically took his money and did nothing this time.  My fiance's had to clean like never before, and there are just all kinds of issues.  The landlord feels like crap for everything, cuz all of this started showing up AFTER we handed over our deposit and signed the lease (the previous tenants were very good at hiding things, I'll give them some credit there).  Anyway, today is moving day, and I won't be back online til likely Monday night or so, after Comcast transfers our account to the new place.

I am SOOOOOOOO not looking forward to today, I tell you what.  I've gotta do the majority of the carrying, lifting, etc., etc., so I'm going to be flat-out exhausted by the time we're all done.  Yay, rah, woo-freaking-hoo, lol.

Landlords like that will probably screw you out of the deposit. I would ask to see the receipt or have him walk through the place before you move in making sure he writes down any spots with damage so he doesn't claim you did it.

        Burn that mother down!

I knew/know but don't really talk to a chick that lived in an apartment that was next door to a slob and the slobpartment was full gross.  It ended  up getting full of roaches, and one day the slob woman moved out. With no one left to feed them, there basically was an apartment full of hungry roaches living next door to someone with food.  I stopped speaking to her shortly after this info was shared with me, and I am unsure if she ended up moving or surrendering to the impending roach invasion.

Sometimes filth is so filth the only way to be rid of it completely is to: Burn that Mother Down!

Just be careful and keep an eye out for roaches etc.  you don't want to end up getting sick or anything like that.  Also, I'd ask for my deposit back if I had to clean and do someone else's job for them.  The landlord is lucky you didn't decide to either sue him or take your money and go Elsweyr.

            +2 on this.

Document EVERYTHING and have the landlord sign off on it. That way you can take them to court if they try to screw you.

What happened, actually, is that the landlord got the property foreclosed on, which went through on March 1st.  He purposefully didn't tell us about it, and even admitted to my fiance about it.  We're currently working on getting the deposit back, PLUS the 1 week of rent payment that he accepted before we found out about the foreclosure, for the week AFTER the foreclosure went through (in other words, we paid him 2 weeks of rent, one of which happened to be the week after he lost ownership of the property).  So we've been dealing with Fannie Mae since March 1st.  We're currently speaking with them about the stuff for what they call "cash for keys", which they deal with us since we're the tenants in the residence at the time of foreclosure.  Dealing with that is a PITA all on it's own cuz the guy handling stuff is a young, pompous, know-it-all prick of a turd.

Aside from that, we've been dealing with problem after problem after problem already with this new place and the landlord here.  First off, the guy doesn't know how to write up a rental agreement/lease contract for crap, then on top of that there are tons of maintenance issues with the place (even though he said the place was going to be ready by April 1st).  The latest and greatest thing, well that's to do with move-in costs and rent.  The agreement we had, for move in costs, was a 2-part requirement.  Part 1: get utilities in our names and present him with proof, part 2: pay a $400 deposit.  Once we do that, we get the keys and that's it, but we can't move in until April 1st, cuz that's the date our lease begins.  We got a phone call this morning from him, stating we're late with paying our first month's rent.  WHAT?!  He even admitted, today, to having left that out of the move-in costs by accident, and is now trying to lay claim to it anyway.  Yeah, well, that's not what the contract says and that's not what's going to happen.

He didn't clean this place at all; he didn't do a move-out inspection with the former tenants; and despite him telling us that he got an health and safety inspection done, per my request (2 weeks prior to us signing the lease, I requested this as a requirement before we'd sign anything), we're going to have to call the inspector ourselves tomorrow because not only did he tell us that he got an inspection done and passed just fine, but he has yet to present us with any information confirming this, and we keep finding tons of things that he tried to just cover up (hoping we'd never see it).  Holes in floors, a big mouse problem, a rotting roof and dining room ceiling, all kinds of stuff.  He's only used to tenants who don't care about themselves and who don't know their tenant's rights, but that's where he really screwed up, because we DO care about ourselves and our family, and we DO know our rights.

Oh, and the old place was loaded with black mold problems, a rotting bathroom floor (due to the leaky shower they "installed") amongst bad wiring and many other issues.  Friggin' place is a death trap, seriously, and we're even very well convinced that the mold issues we discovered contributed to the deaths of Thumper and Socrates (who is my fiance's pet rat that passed away last year), because both got sick prior to passing away, and when we finally got to moving day, we found that the mold problem we'd notified the landlord about had gotten much, much worse.  So, we're dealing with a table full of full plates, to put it lightly.  Will update this asap.  Thanks for your support!

Always go with your spirit. If you don't feel good about it, eat that deposit and move on in life. I've sure learned sometimes in life it's better to cut my losses and move on.

Well, good news and bad news.  We're still dealing with the former landlord and the deposit crap, as well as Fannie Mae and their laziness.

On top of that, things started to go ok in the new place, but then last night we discovered that something had apparently died in the kitchen somewhere.  When I say IN the kitchen, I mean as in inside the floor or walls or something, cuz it's not anywhere where we can find it, including the refrigerator, stove/oven, cabinets, etc.  Landlord claims he found and disposed of a dead mouse under there, but we didn't actually SEE him dispose of it, and the kitchen still smells like decomp, even after MANY hours of blowing the air outside with fans.

On top of this, he decided that, after I made a whole list of things, that he said were ok, and that I discovered were the opposite, he want to put it up for sale now.  I had fun talking with the realty analyst today, I'll put it this way.  He basically said that my landlord is an idiot and was surprised as to exactly how much more I know about the place than he (landlord) does.  He and I had a nice, albeit brief and enjoyable conversation, and one of the last things he told me was that he appreciated all the info I gave him, going thru the house with him and that he's going to have a nice long talk with our landlord about fixing all of these issues before even considering selling this place to anyone.

Additionally, he's not happy about the fact that the guy is trying to sell the place with us having just signed a 1 year lease with him.  Our landlord is an idiot, this I'm sure, and thinks he's being sly by dragging things out in regards to fixing them.  The realtor was a wee bit more than upset at the fact that our landlord, rather than actually fixing the issues with our roof and dining room ceiling (mold and rot issues), his "fix" was simply to scrape off what he could, then paint over the rest (ceiling), and have a roofer patch over the big hole in the roof.  That's like putting a piece of masking tape over an open sore.  It'll cover it from some outside elements, but won't fix the problem whatsoever, allowing it to only get worse.  At least SOME things in life are going well though, sheesh, cuz it sure as heck isn't this stuff!
