GTX 680 stepping up. Sunday, April 01, 2012 12:17 AM (permalink)
Bought standard edition gtx 680 sli on its release date and I already registered and uploaded invoice. I am  planning to step up it to 4gb version when it come out but I don't see stepping up option on my product yet. Is it because there's nothing to step up from here yet or is my product not qualified to step up?
Also is buying extanded warranty mendatory for step up program?

    Shinobier,

We cannot guarantee the 4gb version will be on the step-up list at this time. However, to answer your question directly, you will have step-up ability once you have purchased the extended warranty.

    From www.evga.com/stepup :
If your product has a 3 year warranty purchased on or after 1/1/11 you must also purchase an extended warranty

buying extended warranty gets the step up program,Generally (most times, but a few exceptions have happened)stepping up inside the same product range is not allowed
      http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/

      Graphics Cards Examples:
      • GTX 460 → GTX 580: YES (Upgraded GPU)
      • GTX 460 768MB → GTX 460 1GB: NO (Same GPU)
      • GTX 570 → GTX 480: NO (Must be GPU upgrade)
      I would 100% NOT count on stepping up froma 680 2G to a 680 4G

I know for sure I won't keep gtx 680 for more than 3 years and I know for sure I won't step up to one of those superclock or even regular 2gb fwn edition as I am pretty sure I can get higher clock with precision x no problem. So if 4gb won't be on step up list and step up is only available for first 90 days of purchase.. then paying extra $25 for extended warranty means nothing to me. :(
heck.. even if 4gb comes out, I am darn sure I will have either gtx 780 or 880 before 3 years warranty runs out. :(

So that just means step up = useless.. to me. :(
also.. wow.. customer paying shipping is understandable but require us to buy warranty too? what is that for? I doubt anyone who's buying evga product likely keep them for more than 3 years and all this warranty are non-transferable unlike msi and other companies. >.<.. So basically buying used evga is buying one with no warranty and step up is pretty much.. pppppsssfff.. I should just return gtx 680 sli I bought while I still can and just buy 4gb sli version when it comes out.

MSI and all the others have the same or LESS warranty and cover much less then EVGA allows .Also EVGA warranty will be transferable soon look for a April 2ed announcement .Actually most people do not keep past 3 years

Where is this a bad thing that EVGA allows you to extend your warranty time, you dont HAVE to buy it .Its the same as any other vendor or better at 3 years, and throws in the possible ability to Step up ?Its by far better then what anyone else offers .Also starting now warranty is transferable (not extended warranty at this time it is not confirmed )http://www.evga.com/articles/00671/
you should really read the forums and EVGA newletters that are sent out this is old news now March 16th was the annoucement .

I was kind of wondering the same thing.

I bought my 2GB cards on the 22nd of March and think I'd like to get up to 4GB because I'm running 5760x1080 and eventually 2GB will not be enough.

So I'm wondering, is there a chance that the 4GB cards will be allowed into the step-up program within the next 75 or so day and will it be possible for 2GB users to upgrade to 4GB?

If it's not even possible, then I won't bother with extended warranty and just sell the cards off on ebay when the 4GB hits.

            Thanks!

Generally they have not been,a "few" exceptions have happened but those cards were added well after the original cards and others had been released .In other words i wouldn't count on it at all and i would give it a realistic 5% chance of happening inside your 90 step up window.
the program has never worked that way to begin with and its stated the GPU would need to be better, more memory does not constitute a new GPU
Read the program its made quite clear what is and is not acceptable or expected to be in the list
              http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/
This bold is a example of what your trying to do and is clearly said No .

I see. Thanks for the response.

I didn't really count on it, just thought if there is any official info about it I'd consider the extended warranty.

Bio is right... your chances are slim to none stepping up to a 4Gb from your 2Gb (same GPU). Also, the "warranty" issue has been brought up in this thread if you want to add to it. EVGA is very good about listening to their customers, and I have faith that they just might change the terms regarding the "warranty" you have to buy in order to step-up.

Agreed I would be very surprised if they added the 4GB models for step-up, with the 580's series they didn't have the option to step-up to the 3GB models so I see the same thing happening with the 680's. But we will all just have to wait and see maybe evga will change things up!?!

Looking at it $ wise it would almost be suicide and would surely doom the program .Money in money out they would in the end lose per sale the factored profit margin per card and then lose again on reselling .Even with the new warranty program it wouldn't be enough to offset lost profits per initial sale.

But that's my thoughts and not a EVGA statement of facts .
