Need Help with SSD

Hi , I bought a Intel 520 Series 120G Sata 3 SSD. I want to install it on my EVGA nForce 750i FTW mobo. I don't believe it supports AHCI. Is there a way to make it work and if so how? Thank You

As you stated, the Nvidia chipset does not support AHCI mode, however, after installation check in Device Manager to ensure that the Microsoft generic driver is installed for your storage controllers vice the Nvidia controllers. To install the Microsoft controller, try these instructions: 1. Go to Device Manager and find "Storage Controller" and click it. There will see three nVidia controller drivers. You will need to replace each one with Microsoft’s "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller". To do so, right click on one of the controllers, then click on Properties, then click "Update Driver". Next, click "Browse" for drivers, then click “Browse my computer”, then "Let me pick". You should be presented with a pop-up, and you should see "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" from Microsoft as one of the choices, and that is the one to select. 2. Repeat the process for the other two Nvidia controllers. Once you have changed all of the Nvidia controllers to Microsoft controllers, you will be required to reboot the system to implement the changes. After you reboot, you should check the controllers in Device Manager to verify that all of the changes were implemented. To do so, go to Device Manger, then click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, and you should see the Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller drivers. 3. By installing the Microsoft controller, you should also be able to use TRIM, as long as the SSD is not part of a RAID array. Good luck!

Thanks VistaHead. I will try that and let you know if it works. Should I be looking at a SATA 3 controller card maybe? I will not be running a Raid array.

IMHO, unless you purchase a controller with processing and RAM on board, which are expensive, I would not bother. The cheaper SATA III cards don't really provide much better read/writes than the on board controller.

Hi VistaHead, Update. I did what you suggested, then installed the SSD, Reloaded Win 7 and up and running. I loaded the Intel Toolbox program and everything works in that to. I checked and Trim is enabled. (0) I know that the performance is less than it is capable of with no AHCI , but it put my system WEI from 5.9 to 6.9. Everything is faster. It will do until I do a rebuild in the next couple of months. Thanks for the help.

I also have a 750i FTW, but I am working with a Samsung 830. The system won't detect it. I tried to follow the steps you listed, but I only have 1 Nvidia controller under storage controllers, but I do have 2 more under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Regardless, when I follow the steps on either, I have no Microsoft drivers available to me, not sure what to do:

To be clear, as seen in the shot above, I can see the drive in device manager, but I can't access it or view it under My Computer. Furthermore, if I uncheck the box in the above screen, "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" is still not an option under microsoft.

Backup all of your files, do a fresh reinstall, and the drivers should be there. When you do the reinstall, the only drive that should be connected is the SSD.
