step-up from 580 classy to 680?
Thursday, March 22, 2012 7:03 AM

I really want to do this, am I stupid to even have any concerns about it? I game at 1600p, but no games that I play use anywhere close to 2gb of memory (well, bf3 uses about 1700). Should I do this? Today is the last day I can step up............pretty ironic I guess. Thoughts?

I would do it. It will be a while before you will be #1 in que and you can always cancel it if you decide to keep your 580 Classy Ultras.
I will no longer do business with EVGA.

I wouldn't do it. You're going to kick yourself in the ass when the 4gb and other non reference models come out. Then you'll kick your self in the ass when the gtx685/690/780, whatever the hell it is comes out.

Jacob said in another thread that hydros will be coming out during the first week of April. 3)GF110s are the ones people are waiting for. I'll give you that the speed trade off overwhelms the memory tradeoff. I don't play at the res your at either. BF is taking up 1700 MB? You are almost hitting the ceiling but it could be just that game for now.

1) Sure, Ill only have the three year warranty. I have never kept a video card and used it for over three years. I'll sell this card and have a 780 or 880 before that 3 years is up. 2) My step up ends TODAY. I am paying ONLY for shipping. 3) Okay, what does that even have to do with anything? Those cards are in August, and by then if I decide I want some I'lll sell my 680s which at that time would have significantly more value than my 580s. The idea that this is short-sighted due to future improved products is actually false, this is a smart short and long term deal when it comes to value and eventual cost out of pocket once (if) I decide I want the newer cards.

#110 in queue. I'm also stepping up from a GTX 580 Classy but hey. I gotta have the new card...don't I? ;) Besides, I play at 1920x1280 on BF3 on a single 27" monitor anyways. And the 3yr warranty is no issue. I have 42 days left on stepup but we all know the only 680 listed is the one thats there now. And when the Non-reference and/or WC models come out I can always sell it and use the $$ towards getting one. And also I didnt pay for this 580 Classy, It was a gift and I was given the receipt so i'm only paying $31 for shipping on my 680 so when I sell my vanilla 680 to get the non-ref card I'll just pay the difference. I couldnt pass up the opportunity.

You are right. The 680s will have more value than your 580s. But the resell price will drop on those 680s once the 4g versions are out and then again when the GF110 cards are out. I did not know you intended on upgrading again in such a short period. Some people play the upgrade game at a different pace. None of this even takes any consideration to what AMD does.

So if I do step-up with my GTX 570 to GTX 680...does the step-up start fresh again with 90 days? So if a newer 680 comes out that is gf110 and 4gb..i'll just step up to that? Lol, no clue how this works.

I'm stepping up from my GTX 580 Classy Ultra's for the same reason. I have 6 days left on step up. You cant step up to non reference cards. These GTX 680's will hold value better then the GTX 580 Classified Ultra's now. I see another price drop in the future for 5** series cards.

Maybe I'm the silly one here, but I can't see why there's even a question. I built my new rig in January to take advantage of the "It's my birthday and my wife is letting me build a new computer!" offer. I had no idea when 680's were going to hit. I saw the 680 announcement and got all bummed out, trying to figure out if I could sell my 580 or do something crazy to get a 680. Then I found the Step Up program. For the cost of shipping, I get to turn my 580 into a 680? Hell. Yes. I'm all signed up, and #81 in the queue.

Sigmund68k Maybe I'm the silly one here, but I can't see why there's even a question. I'm not questioning the step up program, it's amazing. However, I can only step up once I have another 39 days on my step up. I've read in multiple places things like "if the 7970 was 30% - 40% faster this card would be called the gtx 660 or 670" so I'm wondering if they're going to push out a new card before we even know what's going on.

pathfindercod where do you see your queue position? Go to your "My Products" page. Click on "View Details" for the product you're using to Step Up. It's listed there.

I just don't understand what your reasoning is here. If you think i'm trolling, please go ahead and report me. You opened a thread asking if " am I stupid to even have any concerns about it?" " Should I do this? Today is the last day I can step up." I'm not the one who's indecisive here. You asked for opinions and I gave you my thoughts. Again, its a free speed upgrade for you, but at the cost of some memory. Also, again I don't play at your resolutions so I wouldn't know anything about your setup either or how its affecting your game play outside of BF3. Seriously, if you are taking offense to what I'm saying then you may go ahead and report me. I'm just saying if I had an non reference top of the class EVGA card, I would not step up to a reference stock card KNOWING full well what's around the corner. If your feelings are hurt, I apologize and will refrain from posting both the negative and positives of a given subject.
