Sub-ambi setup that won't void mobo warranty? Friday, March 16, 2012 6:09 PM (permalink)
I am mainly looking at the CPU socket insulation.  Is there any method of insulation that is not a PITA to clean off in case of RMA?  Like foam kits or anything for LGA 1366.  Looking to throw it on an SR2 with EK HF blocks and run a water loop with an in line TEC chiller.  Nothing sub freezing but being here next to the ocean I don't want condensation as the air here can get humid.  I would like to avoid filling the socket with goop but if that won't void a warranty then all should be good if I have to do that but I'm not sure if it will or not.  LMK what you guys have in mind!

Hmm. Some of the other guys are better probably at this, but Art eraser and foam layers works wonders. You just want an airtight seal of the socket really.

I've only done two sub-ambient setups and used petroleum jelly for both, but from what I have heard, as long as the CPU is in an airtight space and well insulated, the socket won't form condensation and no goop is necessary.  You might want to do more research though before taking my advice.

A kneaded art eraser can pull components off the surface of your board when removing. It can also be a pain to clean up it can become like playdough.

How far below ambient.  You should purchase a thermometer that displays the relative humidity, and post a dew chart nearby.  You can adjust your temps to stay above the dew chart and you won't have to every worry about condensation.
