Windows 8 Problem Sunday, March 11, 2012 4:45 AM (permalink)
Hello,

A little update to my original post here, to reflect the changes in my conclusion regarding the cause of my problems. It was most likely due to consecutive improper reboots after E-LEET caused Windows 8 to hang, probably corrupting the filesystem or files. After which Windows 8 refused to boot anymore and then the error while trying to re-install Windows 8, which I had both wrongly thought was due to a BIOS setting I had changed mere moments earlier.

I just tried the Intel I/OAT option in my Classified's 034 BIOS and that caused my computer to stop booting Windows 8 (Consumer Preview). I don't even see any logo or attempted boot by Windows, my computer just reboots in a loop, around and around not getting anywhere. I have access to the BIOS and have reset default settings and tried the secondary BIOS with version 033. When attempting to start the Windows 8 installer from a USB pen drive, it crashes while the animated semi-circle logo is spinning with a Page_Fault_in_Nonpaged_Area (WimFsf.sys) debug message.

Currently I am trying to debug my computers symptoms and figure out what is wrong. I have taken out all the memory sticks, re-inserting one of them in random slots and tried disconnecting the SATA SSD drives, but so far I have been unable to start the Windows 8 installer. Always the same debug message.

I booted from a pen drive with DOS, as well as a different one with a small Linux system on and they both worked. I am writing here to gather my thoughts a bit and perhaps get some input from you.

I have taken out the BIOS battery just now, waiting a bit before I insert it and try booting the installer again. I don't have a optical drive connected, so my bootable media options are a little limited.

Any ideas?

EDIT: The battery reset did not fix it. The only hardware connected is CPU, one memory stick and the graphics card.

There is a workaround install method. First you must have an HD changed to GPT. Once that is done boot with a USB stick with Windows 8 and you should then be able to install Windows 8 on that drive. It is a pain and that is why I am trying to get more people to have this problem documented it in my Microsoft forum post.

Thank you for your input, it is very appreciated. I shall investigate this further and also add in my experiences in your Windows 8 thread. I must have been lucky on my first Windows 8 install, because it worked once.

I am going to try starting another Windows (Vista / 7) installation in a bit just to confirm that my computer is unharmed.

Windows 7 installed as normal, that is actually a little comforting. I almost thought some memory sticks might have been broken. I did not think the Windows 8 install was broken since it worked once already. I will try to re-create the Windows 8 pen drive installer and give it another try.

Fresh Windows 8 on a USB pen drive and an empty SSD drive (no partitions) resulted in the same error as before. Seeing as Windows 8 is not ready for my use anyway (E-LEET crashing Windows and similar), I am going to stick with Windows 7 for now. I may run Win8 on a secondary drive.

You may have to convert the drive to GPT before you can install.

Are you guys booting in UEFI mode?  I didn't have any problems with my x79, but I do have a Rampage IV, but UEFI mode was fine, never tried booting in legacy mode.

New x79 box specs soon, but for now:

@rjohnson11: Yes, I remember you mentioning that in one of the earlier posts. I just wanted to try different alternatives by process of elimination, to determine if there were no other options.

@Chris123NT: My BIOS/UEFI settings are currently close to default and I haven't yet examined the options extensively, so I am most likely booting in UEFI mode, unless legacy mode is the default.

How did you go about creating the USB pen drive for install?  If you used the old windows 7 method, it will boot in legacy mode.  If you want to install in UEFI mode, format the pen drive in FAT32 (has to be FAT32) and just extract the contents of the ISO to the pen drive.  No need for a boot sector as the machine will automatically pick up on the EFI boot file.  Try that and see if it works without BSODing.

New x79 box specs soon, but for now:

Ah, I see what you meant now, and yes, I did use the old Windows 7 tool to create the bootable pen drive. I did not know you could simply format it with FAT32 and copy over the files for UEFI booting. I will try that, thank you.

Booting a USB pen drive using UEFI mode works for the Windows 8 installer. I even tried to disconnect my SSD's just to see if it would work without any GPT drives being present, and yes, it works.

It would be interesting to know if you have the same problem as us, Chris123NT, with booting Windows 8 in legacy mode from a USB pen drive.

                        Thank you.

I'll try to boot in legacy mode off a USB stick tonight and see if it throws a BSOD.

                            Great.

On another note, out of curiosity I wanted to try booting the Windows 7 installer using UEFI mode too, however that only results in a black screen, with nothing happening. Have you tried that? (I did some alterations on the media, in order to have a bootx64.efi file in the proper folder)

It's windows 7 with SP1 integrated right?  UEFI doesn't work on 7 RTM.

Originally it was RTM, but I have slipstreamed SP1 with RT Seven Lite, maybe that is the problem? I guess the integration feature in that software might not be perfect. Hm.

Yes that is the problem, get a Microsoft ISO, that's the only way it works.
