GTX 560 Ti Over Heating? Sunday, March 04, 2012 1:38 PM (permalink)
I just set up this system, see sig line.  I am running just one video card, and since I lost my last system do to a cheap VC, I decided to add the software OCCT 4.1.1 to monitor my temperatures.  MoBo and CPU are running cool under load, each core running 25 to 30C.  My video card is another issue!  At rest, doing Email/web surfing, or even Photoshop CS5 digital manipulation, I am running GPU temperatures about 35c.  BUT, if I go gaming...playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 my GPU temp jumps up to 90c withing 5 to 15 minutes.  Ditto with Grand Theft Auto IV.

No other card is near my video card, until I added a PCI fan to help draw air away from my 560.  I have a 120mm fan drawing air in from the front.  I have two 120mm fans on the side, one in and one out.  I have a 120 mm fan drawing air out over my Corsair water cooler.  No other place to add a fan.  I even have added an external fan, opened up the side panel, and have it blowing directly on the video card.

I have custom tuned my EVGA Precision, to go 100% fan speed @ 80c.  Nothing is helping.

So my question, could this be a bad card, or are these temps "normal"?  Should I replace the single card fan with a dual fan, another fan, or even water cooled system?  Should I be dealing with EVGA tech support, maybe asking for a RMA?  Any input is appreciated...

You should have BOTH side fans drawing air in. Try doing that and see what happens. You did not say what kind of case you have.

Tried that, no difference.  Not sure what case, but limited air in/out IMHO.  Standard size case, not a mini.  I think I might cut out the top to add air out through the top.  Maybe do the same to draw in from the bottom.

what kind of case do you have?

you mentioned opening up the side and have a fan blowing directly on the gpus; was is just a normal case fan or a desk fan?

try putting a desk fan against the side of the case (with the side off) and see if that makes any difference.  If it does, you have an airflow issue in your case.

If it does not, then the card has an issue.  There is no way MW2 should get your card that hot.

I pulled the side completely off and put a 6 inch house fan up next to the VC card.  No dirrerence.

have you got a bigger fan? 6" isn't really going to provide enough airflow, that's barely bigger than a standard case fan.

You need to use something like a 30cm(1ft)  fan for this test.

True, but it spins like 10,000rpm...much faster than any case fan and pushes a ton of air.  I will try to find a bigger fan, but it is winter here in Alaska and the fans are in storage

sometimes too much is as bad as not enough.

you want a decent volume of air going through the case, but at a speed that the card can suck it in, not just have it blast by.

do you know how to re-TIM a card?  I've read reports of that improving temps by over 20c by other users on this forum.

hmm i used to have a gtx 560 ti in sli confi, and to be honest i overclocked both to 980mhz and overvoltaged and my max temprature during furmark was 72c @ 80% fan speed. i guess there is something wrong with your fan/thermal compund on your gpu and it is not your case as it idles okay and your cpu temprature is okay too. so IN MY OPINION it is not a case problem at all.

can you take a picture on the side of the case ? just to see and be sure ?  also try checking your voltage in msi afterburner and set it to default.

                    I have a GTX560 Ti FPB
If i set (evga precision) my fan speed at 100% i get max 61C when running msi combustor. (abient room temperature 25C)

Just for comparison if you need such kind of data.

Very interesting discovery.  I set my EVGA Precision so my GPU fan would run at 100% @ 80C, but when I did the Fuzzy test my fan would never go above 61% and my temps tapped out at 90C.  Today I downloaded MSI Afterburner (I thought it was the same as EVGA P) and decided to manually set the GPU fan also to be 100% at 80C....COMPLETLY different results...my fan now goes up to 93% and my GPU temps barely reach 70C, mostly in the 50-60C range!  Wow, am I stunned at the difference.

sounds like for whatever reason Precision did not install properly.

Still though, you set your fan to 100%, you should get 100%,
glad it's improved, but I think you still have an issue.

I think maybe you missed "the point"!  The reason my fan has not gone to 100% is not because there is a problem, rather the opposite...the GPU is not getting hot enough to make the fan go higher.  I am wondering if maybe there is some sort of fan limiter (governor?) on the EVGA program (to limit noise?) while the MSI software has no such limitation...just a thought.
