Yes the two games tie into each other, but you don't really need to have played the first one (Although the first one is really fun).

If you're gonna play through one of them, try and get through the other. I found it difficult to play through Arkham Asylum though and I have yet to... it's just another button masher (and it even aims your batarings for you) and the first few hours is quite boring. It seemed as bad as most games these days, but maybe they get better...

I would get AA & play thru a few times, maybe by then they might actually fix Arkham City (espically for steam users). No fix for Win 7 32 bit users & a studder fest for 64 bit. Unless you want to play it in dx9 mode...

However, if you found it possible to button mash (on a keyboard?), you probably weren't playing on high enough difficulty. The game requires a lot of precision and timing both in fights and to avoid fights through stealth, so not sure where you're getting that particular criticism. Haven't tried City yet but would say that at least Batman AA was one of the few unique games to have come out recently. Not just running and gunning or a game that rides on its appearance. I've heard the second is better/more refined from listening to folks on forums and some reviews but if nothing else can vouch the first one is worth playing! Even worth the headache of buying it on GFWL (bleh).

boredgunner Button mash on the mouse, LMB. I was using the default difficulty level though, normal. So don't play on that one... 'Button mashing' only works in the early intro bits, when it's trying to walk you through the various mechanics. But it changes pretty quickly, and by the first of the 'boss' fights (IIRC., Bane), you'll lose if you haven't learned what it was trying to teach you about timing. It actually gets REALLY hard, even at the 'normal' difficulty, as while the actions are not complex, many have to be timed *perfectly* to have the maximum impact (which is basically required to keep going). It's unfortunate the game starts as slow as it does - I tried starting it at least once without it 'catching' and dropped it...but on the second pass, I got further and the rapidly increasing complexity ended up keeping my interest.

I watched a friend play the 1st one, several hours. Never finished though. I decided to skip n play the new one since I kinda sorta got the idea. But yea thats entirely up to you if you want the "full" story.

First is great. Far from a button masher beyond the training levels. You absolutely can not button mash through that game even on normal dif. But AC does not require an AA playthrough to get the idea, understand play mechanics or digest the story in its entirety. Also AC does not use any saves from AA. Both are great but I stopped playing AC once I final got around to playing The Witcher 2. Combat on Dark Mode in that game is intense.

I was disappointed in the game. It was too short to me and really didn't feel like a bigger enviroment like they were saying it was going to be. I was hoping that in this one we could venture out into Gotham and not some little rinky dink corner that's just barely bigger then Arkham Island

Nvr played the first one but arkym city was good , plenty of side quests to play after beating the main story line .. dx 11 is buggy and stutters alot , I only managed to pull 40 / 70 fps on my rig at 1920x1080 .. Other than the buggs its awesome!

The area was nowhere near as big as it was implied. Though, no square mile data was ever given.

Well, I think we all heard 'Arkham City' and read that as 'the whole city'...but it wasn't really ever stated by any devs that I could find in looking back on it. Granted, a pretty darn misleading title that they never bothered to correct...but they never did say the whole of Gotham would be there.

You should play asylum first just because it is an awesome game and will help a little with the AC storyline.

^-- agreed... Not only that but it trains you on certain things, like vents, using the grappler to pull stuff down, etc... The combat really helps as it's a primer for the updated combat modes and features you will find in AA as well. I would say you need to play AA before AC. You should finish it once at least.
