Slow download speeds Sunday, February 19, 2012 2:03 PM (permalink)
I recently moved and got DSL at a speed of 1.5 Mbps but I can't ever get more than 200 Kbps download speeds. I get almost my 1.5 Mbps from speedtest.net but I can't figure out why my downloads are SO slow. I reinstalled Win 7 with a fresh install hoping to fix the problem but it didn't at all. I used a program on another web site to check for stuff but I have no idea what any of it means. I'll post the info below and I hope some of you guys can help me, I'm on my last nerve with this and about to just give up on having internet at home.

Not sure what/where your downloading from, its plausible with a blocked port.

also check to see where speedtest is running from.in wv for me it automaticaly goes to washington dc where i get a great download speed, but if i pick a west coast server to run the test on it drops drastically.

try running a test at speedtest.net and it will check your upload, download and ping.when i was on dsl i never got near the rated speed that i paid for.

            One byte (B) = 8 bits (b)
Check the capital letters.  Speedtest will show Mbps while downloads will be shown as KBps.  If speedtest is showing 1500Kbps (1.5Mbps), then downloads of 200KBps will be normal (1500Kbps/ 8 = 175KBps).

Well after the move I got a new modem and router in one so I don't know if it's a problem like that but, I did a fresh install of Win 7 and reformatted everything so my old configs should've been erased I thought.

The download speeds I get from speedtest.net are literally almost what I pay for, but the times I try to download from any site the max I get is 200 kbps. As for where the speedtest is ran from it's corvallis oregon and that's the closest place to me.

As to the sites I'm trying to download from it's file sharing sites , and steam, and origin. I'm trying to get back into a random game from time to time but downloading BF3 at a max of 200 kbps is killing the nerd inside me.

Just remember that your upstream/downstream is affected by routers and hops in between yourself and the destination. Depending on what is going on with the major backbone providers and the site in question your route can take a path through some slow routers or connections. Just because you are getting rated speeds from a testing site does not necessarily translate to the speed you'll get to a site elsewhere.

I have the RR 10Mb/s package, my downloads are normally 1.2MB/s.  It is normal.
