Picked up my flying toy today
Saturday, February 11, 2012 9:52 PM

Bought for a nice big discount from my work (Fry's). Flies like a charm. This may just get me into the RC aircraft hobby. Can anybody guess which model this is? (Hint, it's the best IR remote control one you can get at Fry's).

Only complaint so far is the battery life. 6-8 minutes flight time on average... if I can upgrade the built in battery...... hmmmmm

Nice. r/c heli's are a lot of fun, and don't be shy about smashing them a lot when you first start out. thats why you should always start with a cheap one and learn with it then move up to more powerful models. I have the Double Horse 9100. Its nearly 2 feet long but it's only a 3ch but boasts a single top rotor design with verticle tail rotor so it looks and flys almost identical to the 4ch.'s models. Its not ment for tricks but with a few mods it can be a little beast of a heli. Its the same one as in this vid, I also made the same mod to the swashplate as this guy along with modding the servo rod so its amazingly fast now.

I've had my share of crashing them already when I demoed these helis at work for a whole month (Christmas last year). So now I've got the hang of them completely, which is why I decided to buy one for the first time These things are a joke to fly. Almost too easy! Definitely gonna look towards getting some bigger faster tougher ones to fly.

I own a few, one particular heli I wish I didn't buy is the Trex 100 and another I have had a few issues with but love to death the Mini Titan it may look small in the video but I assure you it has an amazing amount of power and dangerous as hell if you get too close to it lol If I was going to buy another mini heli I would try this one the Walkera v120d05 http://www.youtube.com/wa...7I&feature=related Any way good luck and I hope you get into the RC heli scene very soon It is a great hobby short flight times like 5- 10 minutes are the norm you just need to buy more battery packs or increase the Amp hour rating of the battery. You need to be sure what the max is for your unit but the bigger ones give you a bit of choice the usb charge toy ones not really...

^what Darron said. My DH came with a crappy 900mah Li-On and only had a 8 min flight time per charge. So I upgraded to a stronger brushless motor and got 3 extra 1200mah LiPo batteries that fit in the stock chassis. I now have a 13-15 min avg. flight time per battery and thats when Im doing a lot of hovering.

Considering thevery small size of the onboard battery the micro heli's use and that you recharge them from the r/c and not a stand alone charger 8 min is pretty impressive.

I had a RC Plane once...my dad flew it into a canal within the first 5 minutes of flying it for the first time. It seems like it would be a fun hobby though.

I have a Sigma s109g apache for indoors a s031g for outdoors. Ive gone thru 3 of the s109Gs, they are great fun and take a pretty good beating. I probably should buy the USB charger...but I dont mind the charge cord coming out of the remote. It drains the remote batteries, but I still get 6-8 charges and flights with a set of AAs and it charges in 45 mins for around 8 mins flights. picked up a 4ch DH 9116 around xmas, got it on sale with upgraded lipo and some spare parts, waiting for spring to fly.
....rigs in progress....

I have a few Syma S107's (same as OP listed basically), you can mod the heck out of them; I added an extended battery, removed a lot of the weight off it, took of excess LED's, etc. and it's pretty fast, manuverable, and indestructable... Good starter copter in the $~20 range.

knightsilver Any good online RC stores? Ive been doing more to get some fresh air and sunlite.... quick google found these: http://www.towerhobbies.com/ http://www.ehobbies.com I chpper would be fun, maybe even building a gas one at some future point would be fun... I have had good luck with www.Xheli.com. they carry a very hug assortment of heli's in all different classes. plus they sell replacement parts for most of the heli's they sell for amazingly cheap prices. If you are looking for upgrade parts like stronger motors and such you are better off sourcing a local shop so you can match the components up to make sure they will work.

nice.. You should have a lot of fun with that... then you can upgrade to one of these: don't think that because they get bigger, you get more flight time. That's a stretched 600... It only flies for 6 minutes on 5000 mah 12S lipos
