[Issue] Networking a Mac Friday, January 27, 2012 3:57 PM (permalink)
The other day I created a small file share server. I'm able to get my computer (Win7) and my xbox to connect fine. However, my MacBook (OSX Lion) doesn't want to see any thing on the network. After a bit of fiddling, I found that disabling the firewall on my MB would allow me to see my PC and my PC to see my MB. My MB doesn't see my server, which is what I want it to do.

Does anyone know how to get the MB and Server to see each other?

I'm not a Mac person but this guide looks good.  Access PC Windows 7 Files From Mac OS X Lion. Use your "small file share server" computer name in Step-6. If you need to use the "small file share server" IP address then ensure you assign a static IP address and/or setup a DHCP reservation on your router/DHCP server. That will prevent the IP address from changing.

So I tired this, however it didn't work the way I had really wanted it to. Thank you for your help. Your google-fu is better than mine.

      So my solution to this:
I like the MacBook's design and the hardware is still worth a hoot. Dual boot with Win 7 and give OS Dumb the smallest portion of my hard drive.

This way I get the functionality of Win 7 and when I need OS Lion, I can maybe sometimes use it. I think my dabbling in Apple products has ended.

What didn't work exactly? We might be able to find a better solution.

A Virtual Machine might be better than dual booting. VirtualBox has always worked great for me on Windows and Ubuntu. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

I've never really liked the idea of a Virtual Machine. I can see how it would be useful, but bootcamp hasn't given me to many issues yet. Well, other than the fact OS Lion decided that anything before Win 7 is not allowed to be installed and dropping support for all PPC programs.

When I get home I'm going to run through the process one more time to see if I get can it to work.

          My ultimate goal:
To read/write on the server from my mac
To read/write on the mac from my PC (and vise versa)

But I still wasn't able to install the connector for WHS 2011 onto my Mac. I forgot the error message, but it was something to the tune of, "I can't find your server."

I have already tried those 2. Both of them seem more like band aids then actual fixes. Oh and the 2nd one doesn't work. It won't allow me to "Find the server". So I never officially connect to it.

I went back and reworked the first solution and got it to work this time. I forgot to add smb:// to my server address. It works great, until I have to restart my computer. Then I have to manually reconnect to the server again. This is when I remembered my ultimate ultimate goal of putting all my lossless music onto the server and just point my itunes to those locations. It would be a little obnoxious to have to go through a process every time I want to jam out.

It may be nit-picky, but I think it'll just be easier to dual boot with windows and not deal with the hassle of OS Lion. My friend who works in IT said the Mac OS is generally annoying. Every update they seem to break something with networking.

                Local Network:

Connecting to your windows from a mac -Local:
                1) Share the drive on the windows computer you are wanting to share
                2) Get the local IP your windows computer uses
                3) On your mac go to: Go--> Connect to server
                4) type: smb://(insert IP here)  So for example smb://192.168.0.2
                4) Type in the username and pass (if needed)
                5) Have fun :)

Connecting to your Mac from a windows computer -Local:
                1) Open up system preferences
                2) Open sharing
                3) tick the file sharing option, then click options and enable SMB and FTP
                4) Go to your windows computer and use your browser of FTP client
                5) type ftp://(insert the local ip of the mac here)  For example: ftp://192.168.0.111
                6) Tpe in username and pass (if needed)
                7) Have fun :)

Connecting while not on the local network:

Connecting to your Mac from a windows computer:
forward port 21 (this is the default FTP port) to the local ip of your mac through your router, then you can connect to the mac on your windows computer from just about anywhere using your IP.
This is one way you can get your IP http://www.whatsmyip.org/
So to connect to your mac while not on your local internet will be:
                FTP://insertIpHere:21

Connecting to your windows from a mac:
Forward port 139 (default SMB port) through your router to the local IP of the windows computer.  After you do so it will be pretty close to the same as above for connecting.
                Type: smb://InsertIpHere:139

I recomend getting fileZilla for windows.  It is a pretty good FTP client.
                http://filezilla-project.org/

I hope this helps.  It has been a while since I have dont it myself so if anything does not work LMK and I will try and get back with you
