Connecting while not on the local network: Connecting to your Mac from a windows computer:
forward port 21 (this is the default FTP port) to the local ip of your mac through your router, then you can connect to the mac on your windows computer from just about anywhere using your IP.
This is one way you can get your IP
http://www.whatsmyip.org/ So to connect to your mac while not on your local internet will be:
FTP://insertIpHere:21 Connecting to your windows from a mac:
Forward port 139 (default SMB port) through your router to the local IP of the windows computer. After you do so it will be pretty close to the same as above for connecting.
Type: smb://InsertIpHere:139
I recomend getting fileZilla for windows. It is a pretty good FTP client.
http://filezilla-project.org/ I hope this helps. It has been a while since I have dont it myself so if anything does not work LMK and I will try and get back with you
