Spanish style home with Double Brick walls WIFI HELP! Monday, January 16, 2012 9:52 PM (permalink)
Looking for the best Wireless Extender or Powerline AV adapter for my wireless network.

I've placed the router in the middle of the house since we have users at all ends of the home and getting like 1 bar and sometimes nothing in some areas of the house, The house is 4,000 square feet and covered with double brick wall.

I'm looking to try one of these extenders and wondering if anyone can recommend anything better or maybe some tips on getting the house set up with a solid and stable wifi connection. The house was remodeled pretty good and has some new wiring threw out the house so the powerline might be the best choice? I'm just not too sure how stable these powerline adapter things are, Never used one before.

I was also thinking of upgrading the router to see if that would boost the wifi signal even more, right now I'm using the Linksys/Cisco E1000 which is the basic model, The E4200 CISCO Router Is my choice for the upgrade since it seems like it might extend the range a lot better then the basic model I own now.

I need a strong and steady connection since we have 4 PC's and 1 Laptop hooked up at all times, Something fast for Online gaming and HD streaming is the main use.

Thank you.

I think this might be the best solution since it won't need to penetrate threw these thick ass walls lol, Has some really good reviews.

      Powerline adapters are an option.

You can also buy a cheap Asus router for 40 bucks and flash it to DD-WRT firmware, and configure it as a wireless bridge/repeater to extend the range of your network.

Pretty much you just set a static IP on your primary router, configure the repeater with that static IP, disable DHCP, and set up your security settings and SSID to match your primary router.

Here's the guide on the DD-WRT website:

Thanks for the help, I'm just going to order a 100ft of Ethernet cable and run it to my computer from the router. Anyone know where I can buy some small mounting clips for the cable? trying to make it look clean and run it up high, I found a white colored Ethernet cable that will blend in well with my walls.

I believe there's molding you can use to hide the cable along the wall.

Just wondered how that all worked out for you?
I have one of those cheap $40 Asus (EDIT, its a $40 Netgear from Wally-Mart) G routers that was mentioned hard wired with a 100’ line to my main router to extend my wireless signal and it works great.  The set up was simple and I didn’t have to flash the bios with DD-WRT.  The signal extends through two brick walls and across to the neighbor’s house that I let them use.  They still get 4 bars.
Hard wiring to the extending router worked great. Wireless repeating between routers for the brick wall was a fail as it cut the bandwidth down a lot.
