I then remembered I did a drivers update which in turn led me to this page after doing a google search on the driver version. You can see my specs in my sig.

I'm going to change back to 182.50 since I actually have a copy of that patch sitting on my hard drive. I knew there was a good reason to keep it around. That is the one patch I had running for the longest time so I trust it the most.

Anyone have a link to where I can download the last 182 patch?

I am going to switch to 182.50 right now and try it out for a few days. I will post back on whether that fixed my gaming freeze problem.

EDIT: So far so good.. I have not had any freezing problems.
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (smoothie)

Im running the 191.07 drivers for the 9800GTX+ and do not have an issue. It's a topic of discussion at a few other forums I've noticed! I didn't think a driver could cause damage in the long run to my hardware......Looks like I'm going to reconsider drivers, but which one ...In the end I just wanted to get a stable driver for my (2) GTX 295's and Asus Rampage II Extreme mother board but not damage them slowly! I am unsure about my Mother board but I believe my GTX 295's have nf200 chips! That being stated, I would hate to have a driver that encourages voltage spikes or slow damage related with the driver and those chips If what I read was correct! I see lot's of people that have not noticed a problem yet, If ever, but there are those that had my same cards I do and noticed the damage after a while so for a n00b like me, it's kind of scary to risk it! I have not installed any drivers yet as my computer was just built, so I guess this is the right time for me to learn more about it and hopefully make the right choice in the end! I will be using Windows 7 Ultamate 64bit as well! Fingers crossed!

the nf200 is a mobo chip.... i do not think the gtx295s have them.
the purpose of the nf200 was to increase the bw of the PCIE lanes to 16x
The problem is yet unknown. I only know of 5 others aside from myself that have
reported spikes in voltage. As for temp, there are many reporting increase in temp.
Especially on the PCB and VRMs on the PCB.

No one has pinpointed the problem directly, or can be 100% sure what is causing it.
However, according to a few reports, it affects boards with the nf200 chipset mainly.
Another report, this one i agree with almost 95%, states that weak or dying GPUs
will give in to these 191.07 drivers. Accordingly, I think this was my case.

However again, in other cases it has gone to the point of affecting system wide
hardware. This was true in irides cases.

Once again, these drivers are great if they work for you.
But do take caution when you install them.
Uninstall them immediately the moment you start to see a problem.
By problem, i mean BSODs, black screen sound loop, crazy temps,
out of the ordinary voltage spikes, DX10 crashing in windows testing.
These are but a few of the symptoms.

As for drivers, just make sure to turn off windows auto update and make sure you are incontrol of every update.
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (Paradox1010)

All of this is allot to take in! But not to a dangerous extent. Unless you have your card OCed very high. at my clocks of 774 on the gtx 285, it was enough to cause a spike and fritzed the card out. Strangely enough Nothing smelled funny. The cards just "died". In Iride4u's case, i believe instead of his cards giving, his PCIE/nf200chip on the board gave in.

When i tested with stock working GT8800s the spike on the voltmeter wasnt even there (though there was a bit of gain on the meter it can be accorded to a mechanical rounding).

Suggestion - stay away from these drivers if youve got some crazy OC going like me. These are indeed ticking timebombs. The more you stress it at a go the more probably you give the spikes to occur at high OCs. in my case. OCCT and constant furmark did it.

Do we know if this increased power draw is present on all drivers 191.07 and greater? Or did Nvidia correct the issue and its safe to use later drivers like the latest 195.55 BETA/WHQL-Candidate?

0xdeadbeef

Thanks, but that thread is the main source for speculations and spreading of rumors about the 191.07 driver. There is not one single shred of evidence in there that proves the 191.07 is overvolting the NF200 chipset. There are just a bunch of people making guesses. I am sorry some members have hardware problems but please don't blame the driver and present speculations and guesses as hard evidence. Just do the RMA and move on.

We're lucky we have EVGA's lifetime RMA, but killing hardware with a driver that now has documented overvolting issues is really unnecessary. If people with still-working hardware can learn from the unfortunate hardware deaths others have experienced with this driver, why try to discredit them? Saves everyone, including EVGA, an RMA and saves some perfectly good hardware from the trash heap. Besides troubleshooting, I'd say the main purpose of this forum is to share information about drivers and settings.
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (ensabannur)

Zodduska

Chicken.

ROFL.
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (Mike245)

Here's a brief detail of what happened to me since the old posts all got deleted:

- Installed 191.07 driver, noticed gpu temps rise to 105c multiple times, I thought this was odd since the card rarely breaks 80 with normal usage. I rolled back to 186.18 ASAP .

- After rollback temps still climbed up to 105c and idle temps were +5c from normal.

- Powered down system, cleared cmos and reseated GPU, temps went back to normal.

- All was good for 1-2 weeks then my system started hanging on the desktop like I described above. I made no significant changes to software/drivers during this period. I tested hardware with IBT and Memtest+ 4.00 and both fail after being stable for over a year at the same OC.

- Tried Adding more voltage, in case my CPU somehow degraded after all this time, I thought it helped but apparently not because my system can't pass at 1800 FSB/MEM anymore.

- Reverted to 1600 FSB/MEM, IBT passes and memtest both seem to pass, but still random hangs.

- Reverted to stock, only got 1 hang in a week of usage which is significantly less than the once per couple hours I was getting at 1800 FSB, so I'm just about ready to conclude my chipset is failing highly likely it being a direct result of 191.07. I can still game for hours at a time at full OC, and the system isn't shutting itself down so I doubt it's the PSU. My problems are also symptomatic of bad RAM yes, but I think bad chipset (memory controller) is more likely based on everyone else's problems with this driver.

I'm not going to RMA yet until it starts failing @ stock. Speak up if RMAing your mobo helped you!
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (slothmaster2001)

mdai85

slothmaster2001

well i ran 191.07 for 2 days. did some testing and everything ran ok..... but i start getting random lock ups when the comp was at idle. so i rolled back to 185.85 and last night i got another random lock up at idle when i was asleep and video card was at stock speeds and cpu was only at 3.83 ghz which i can get this thing stable at 4.05. so moved cpu to 3.6 to see if it will randomly lock up again while i am at work. if it keeps locking up when i move it to stock speeds would that mean it got to my chipset for my mobo?

This is exactly what happened to me with my 790i ultra. It took me 1 or 2 weeks after rolling back my driver before I noticed the random hangs, mostly when the computer is near idle on the desktop. Once I click file or app windows stops responding. I tried increasing voltages to no avail, now I'm running @ stock. I think my chipset is dying cuz even at stock it freezes, but less frequently.

well there is 3 people right there with the same problem with the 790 ultra mobo with the same problem. so if people are saying hte 191.07 doesnt destroy mobos or video cards obviously they were wrong. so far my mobo with stock video card speeds and cpu at 3.6 its holding with no lock ups but i would like to be back at 4.05 i just rmaed my video card and i had a spare to still use my comp. i dont want to rma my mobo. i dont have a spare one of those or another comp to use
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (Zodduska)

 Chicken.

Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (Mike245)

slothmaster2001

well i ran 191.07 for 2 days. did some testing and everything ran ok..... but i start getting random lock ups when the comp was at idle. so i rolled back to 185.85 and last night i got another random lock up at idle when i was asleep and video card was at stock speeds and cpu was only at 3.83 ghz which i can get this thing stable at 4.05. so moved cpu to 3.6 to see if it will randomly lock up again while i am at work. if it keeps locking up when i move it to stock speeds would that mean it got to my chipset for my mobo?

This is exactly what happened to me with my 790i ultra.

Point of order here, those comments are not by Unwinder. What was edited out, which was by Unwinder, was the fix for the GPU temp readings issue.
Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (theGryphon)

^ Just because you're not having any problems doesn't mean it's not as bad as some people claim it is. All those people with problems are not liars and there are problems caused by these set of drivers but it is not fully reproducible. Those people are inviting others to be cautious and that's the right thing to do; declaring these drivers 100% safe is irresponsible, to put it in the mildest way!

Again, these drivers do not cause problems for everyone but there are very serious cases where it did.

Re:i am scared to use 191.07 (moparornocar)

slothmaster2001

i keep seeing everyone having problems with it. should i use the 185.85 or the 191.07? can decide. i want something stableeeeee

Dude i am runinng the 191.07 driver on my rig and i am not having any issues whatsoever, its not as bad as some people claim it is!
