When the released the 3.3 patch, they forced users to use their latest and greatest gpu feature that was supposed to be ultra fast and great. Little did they know, it got bugged upon release and many people have suffered the panics and very looong loading screens. The nifty little trick here is to go into your config.wtf file and add... SET gxapi "OpenGL" ...to it at the bottom and then relaunch. This enables the old known working OpenGL instructions and you will once more be flying along in the greatness of FPS and fast loading screens once more. I know I was getting fustrated with it since it was about the same time I had to get this card since my stocker went up in smoke, so was a little dazed and confused on what was going on, but a trip over to the Warcraft Mac Support forums fixed all that and I was back up and running as smooth as can be.

WoW will run just fine under dual boot windows since the windows client still uses OpenGL and the new client was suposed to be using the new OpenCL that is in Snow Leapord that when everything gets worked out, is supposed to be fasted then OpenGL, and the EVGA 285 has support for, knock on wood.

I've added the SET gxapi "OpenGL" line to my config file, and the black screen lockups still happen. However, I get my usual triple-figure fps rates rather than the 20s I was seeing with the new back end before it crashes. This change happened on patch day; I wouldn't be complaining and searching for a fix if this widely known one worked.

Their "old" back-end isn't the same as the 3.2.2 code. They know this, which is why they are trying to gather info on people who have problems that aren't solved by this setting. (I'm not even going to touch your OpenCL remark, as it's just wrong wrong wrong. OpenCL is not a 3D rendering middleware, in the least)
Re:Kernel Panics.... and I have had to card for less than a year. (bnumerick)
Your general point is true that when it's fixed it should run faster but the rest of the information you posted is pretty much false beyond that. The Windows client runs in Direct X unless you run the game with the -openGL flag enabled which is not default nor optimal. The Mac client wasn't rewritten to use OpenCL they rewrote it using Cocoa. The old engine was written in carbon. They both run OpenGL though.

elindquist

WoW will run just fine under dual boot windows since the windows client still uses OpenGL and the new client was suposed to be using the new OpenCL that is in Snow Leapord that when everything gets worked out, is supposed to be fasted then OpenGL, and the EVGA 285 has support for, knock on wood.

Re:Kernel Panics.... and I have had to card for less than a year. (Mac_vista64)

You can't repair your system drive unless you have a 2nd boot drive, and it is advisable to use the latest versions of Apple Disk Utility, not just what is on a DVD. Plus, HFS+ is 'fragile' enough that a more reliable and robust disk repair utility like Alsoft Disk Warrior is a must.

I'd try out SuperDuper for free and see what it does in making a clone that is bootable.
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

I use that before every applying or installing any of Apple software updates or making other changes.
Boot from it and repair the main drive. Make a test system drive.
Run TechTool Pro 5 and Disk Warrior for preventative maintenance, and because Apple's DU misses things.

And I would not rely on TimeMachine or any one method or backup set. Ever. Redundancy.

Re:Kernel Panics.... and I have had to card for less than a year. Keep OS X on a couple drives/partitions, and keep a small plain Apple vanilla "Emergency Only" boot drive for maintenance and repairs.

Re:Kernel Panics.... and I have had to card for less than a year. (Mac_vista64)

 SuperDuper
TimeMachine
Carbon Copy Cloner

Those are good at backups, and at making bootable clone backups, that no one should ever be without when running Mac OS.

In fact I would never install a new Apple Mac OS over another, or do so without a couple backups. And a copy of Disk Warrior. But at this point, I'd probably wait for 10.6.2. May be weeks, likely not more than a month. All graphic drivers are rolled into the OS, and into any OS updates. Standalone graphic driver updates are the exception and very rare, usually once when a new card comes out.

Re:Kernel Panics.... and I have had to card for less than a year.
Any help would be appreciated I am getting kind of annoyed with this, its been happening like daily....

I think my card is still under warranty... I registered the only thing I am unsure of is I ordered it from NCIX from this website does that count as ordering it right from EVGA since I don't see an order direct from NVIDEA option. Not to mention the only "receipt" I have is a printed one from the order. Some help would be wonderful because I love the card and I just started acting up recently the last month or so....
