I suppose I could just mash it in there. I bought a geforce approved 3 way SLI psu in case I eventually want to go for the third card. Not sure if it's worth the money though.

Do to the way the cards scale, you can expect between a 80% and 100% gain adding a second card, but only 60% to 80% from the third. and that will depend on game utalazation. also Physix is an option for a third card, but that two would depend on the game utalazation of the technology.

Folding on the otherhand, you could utilize full potential of each card added. There use to be an old faq on the nvidia site stating to expect 2.6 times the performance of a single card, I tried to find it, butit looks like they have updated their site with new stuff.
Re:X58 SLI3 pci-e Question (Jahni Five)

So I just tried to move the card into the second slot and you're right about it fitting, except that the front panel audio connector cable is in the way. I feel like I won't be able to get a card in that second slot since the PCI is raised a bit and will hit the video card's heat sink cover.
Re:X58 SLI3 pci-e Question (KMoore4318)

With your board the Lanes ae locked 16,8,8 there is no change by using the adjasent lane like there is on most boards A dual slot card WILL lock your 1X slot, and a card in the 2nd one would block your PCI.

Your loss with the 8X slot would be less than 2%

X58 SLI3 pci-e Question (Jahni Five)

I have a question regarding an SLI setup on my X58 SLI 3 mobo. The specs show one pci-e x16 slot and two pci-e x8 slots. If I bridge two ASUS ENGTX560 OCII cards together will the x8 lane slow things down? And will I even be able to fit the second card in the second slot (it looks like the PCI slot below it will be in the way)?

I've been trying to read articles regarding PCI-E slots but they all seem outdated and related only to older video card performance.

Thanks in advance for any help!
