I don't keep GPUs long enough for this to make a difference, but this may be an issue for other users.

That said, the warranty changes coming on April 2nd look great!

if i was to drop 500 clams on a card it better have the top warranty offered, not evga telling me i have shell out another $60 for it.

Just offering it as a way for folks to see a different angle. It is one thing to say EVGA no longer has a warranty longer than three years or a lifetime, vs. not liking the fact you are now paying for that option if you want it.

I am a consumer too. But I will not pass judgment until I better understand April 2nds announcement. That is all I am offering to you here...

Re:680 on Newegg!!!!! (DarkOwnage_)

kody7839
You have a whole lot of assumptions in your hypothetical scenarios, but I'll take a stab at it.

The problem in your logic is that you are talking about unreleased technology that has yet to hit the market and still months out. A lot can happen and the GK110 may never be finalized. Your way, while beneficial in the short term to enthusiasts/builders, makes terrible business sense for what is currently available on the market.

This card outperforms AMD's top card that is currently priced at ~$550, and they're selling it at ~$500. I don't see how you can label it "mid-range" when it is the top performing card currently available. Until GK110 is actually released this is NVIDIA's top of the line card. Just like we didn't see price drops on the 580's till right before this launch, there is no reason to sell this card for any less that the market demands.

This. And I will just make a couple points but probably won't reply back so you can make all the rebuttals you want, I don't feel like arguing ;).

Let's say they did go with option 2. What will happen immediately? No stock. Period. And what just happened with the price of the cards at $550. No stock. Period. The shareholders are sitting there fat and happy right now because maybe they did make an extra $200 in profit.

Let's continue on your "path" here. AMD releases their product, NVidia releases the GK110. Again, the shareholders are sitting fat and happy then too ;).

Normally, I would fill in the gaps with points such as supply and demand problems with selling a top of the line card $200 cheaper than it's competitors and why that's a bad idea, blah blah blah. Also, pointing out the difference in profits in option 1 to option 2, again referencing supply and demand, blah blah. And quote how the GK110 is suppose to come out in September-December time frame (rumor mill). So the time span between then and now is just enough time for the cards mature while steadying the supply and demand, blah blah.

Connect the dots yourself. Time to go do something productive....like F5 until it becomes in stock again :D!
Re:680 on Newegg!!!!! Take a card designed to be a mid range card, one that they originally planned on being ~300 dollars, and jack the price to be in the range of the 7970 yet just under it since it performs a bit better, and they have room to wiggle on the price since they will be making around 200 more than they originally planned. Then when 8970 comes out, drop the price on gk104 to where it should have been from the beginning, and price the gk110 card at a little above the competition since performance should be similar. This has a couple effect on the profits, first the profits are higher, since they have a larger margin on the mid range card being purported as a flagship, however, number sold doesn't correlate with other high end launches for a few reasons, and then gk110 only sells to the uber enthusiasts and ignorant people that just bought it cause it was top dog; as people that bought gk104 feel screwed over. The reason that gk104 doesnt sell so well is cause people that do their homework, know that nvidia is holding back and performing some price gouging. Those that go into microcenter and the like randomly to get a top end graphic card are pushed to the 7970 for having more ram and similar performance. Profits start out higher than originally expected, but over time are less than expected due to multiple reasons stated above.

2, price gk104 where it was originally intended to be, selling magnitudes over the amount in the playout above. Profits per card are less, but overall profits in the long run and short run are higher due to shear numbers. People that want a card get a top performer for mid range price, people that go to microcenter are pushed to it for performance and price. A 8800 style revolution is in play here. Nvidia is selling a card at around 200 less than a 7970, and yet beating it performance wise. Then they release gk110 and not only sell huge amounts cause it is a top performer, but also cause nvidia gains a larger following for starting another 8800 style revolution without price gouging the customer. Profits in the model are good in the beginning, and continue to get better due to the gained following and general good feeling towards nvidia, these increased profits and following last for ~2 years.

Sure, I am probably totally in denial, but which would sound better to you as a shareholder.

We can make a mess o money now, and have typical profits after now.
or
We can make mess o money now, and keep those kinds of profits potentially for years to come.

I stand by the video that I posted, that is honestly what I feel nvidia is saying to the customer...screw you, we will charge whatever we want and you will pay it, even if we are holding out on you, we love suckers!

You have a whole lot of assumptions in your hypothetical scenarios, but I'll take a stab at it.

The problem in your logic is that you are talking about unreleased technology that has yet to hit the market and still months out.

Re:680 on Newegg!!!!!
